Leap Day walk-in weddings being offered across San Diego County

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego couples wanting to say their vows on a memorable wedding date are in luck this year.

With 2024 being a leap year, the San Diego County Clerk’s Office is offering walk-in wedding ceremonies on Leap Day, Feb. 29.

According to NASA, it takes about 365.25 days for the Earth to orbit the sun which is typically rounded down to 365 days in one calendar year. To count the extra partial day, one day is added to the calendar every four years.

In honor of the unique date, San Diego Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk Jordan Marks said the county is waiving appointment requirements on Thursday at four offices in Chula Vista, Downtown San Diego, San Marcos and Santee.

The offices will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for civil ceremonies and marriage licenses, with walk-in appointments welcome between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

A non-confidential marriage license costs $129. For an additional $107, couples can have their ceremonies performed by County staff in English or Spanish.

To ensure a spot, the county recommends booking an appointment online at www.sdarcc.gov or by calling the County Clerk’s Office at (619) 237-0502.

The next leap years are 2028, 2032 and 2036.
