As first-year students set foot in their new homes for the next nine months, areas surrounding Worcester’s college campuses should expect to get busier.

The College of the Holy Cross had its move-in day Saturday. The day was filled with parents and students unloading boxes and boxes from their vehicles as resident assistants lent a hand.

“It’s been a little chaotic trying to get people in,” head resident assistant Adam Cooper said. “But overall, the system is decent. Having it all in one day is a lot, though.”

Amanda Masse, a freshman from Rhode Island, said she was at first overwhelmed, but now that she’s settled into Brooks Hall, she’s feeling better. As for college, she’s ready for this new chapter to begin.

Her mom, Andrea, expressed pride and excitement for her daughter.

“We’re still trying to take it all in, but I think she’s going to enjoy it here,” Andrea Masse said. “She’s really made her dorm look like home; it’s kind of like a mini replica of her bedroom.”

Joe Roddy said moving his daughter, Bree, into her dorm filled him with nostalgia. He graduated from Holy Cross in 1986.

“It’s a leap of faith,” Joe said. “I’m proud to be sending her here.”

Joe and Karen, Bree’s mother, came from Chicago to move in Bree. She is their last child to go to college, which made the experience bittersweet for the parents.

“I’m super excited,” Bree said. “I’m excited about meeting new people, all from different walks of life.”

Joe Roddy said, as an alumnus, he is proud of his daughter. Three of his college roommates’ children are all upperclassmen, which reassured him his daughter would have people she knew on campus.

“I’m excited for her and what these next four years await,” Joe said. “They were four great years for me, and I just hope the same for her.”

Michele Yurchick’s flight from Florida landed Saturday morning, just in time to help move her daughter, a senior, into her college dormitory for the last time.

Yurchick said she’s excited for her daughter’s final year in undergrad.

“It’s hard because you’re used to having them home, but you have to let them be independent,” Yurchick said. “I think she’s become her own person.”

As for advice to parents moving their children in for the first time, Yurchick said “don’t sweat the small stuff.”

“There’s growing pains, for sure,” Yurchick said. “Let your kids have fun. Let them enjoy the ride.”
