The Providence Journal, in partnership with The Public's Radio, Rhode Island College and Rhode Island PBS, is hosting the 2023 Rhode Island CD1 Special Election Candidate Forum Tuesday night.

The forum will take place at Rhode Island College.

What's the format of the event? Is it a debate or forum?

The format will be as follows: two one-hour sessions, with five Democratic candidates each hour. The sessions have been set up in reverse alphabetical order. Ten candidates in total met the criteria for inclusion in the forums.

Group 1

  • Regunberg

  • Quezada

  • Matos

  • Goncalves

  • Casey

Group 2

  • Carlson

  • Cano

  • Berbrick

  • Beauté

  • Amo

The forum partners looked at a variety of factors including campaign activity, endorsements, the size of donor lists, ethics and financial disclosures to decide which campaigns had met the minimum threshold of effort to be included in this event.

The candidates will field questions from moderator Ian Donnis, political reporter for The Public's Radio, and from Journal political reporter Patrick Anderson. The event will be hosted by Luis Hernandez of The Public’s Radio.

Where can I learn about where the candidates stand on all the major issues before the Sept. 5 primary?

Need help deciding who to vote for in RI's Special Election Primary in September? Use this guide to help distinguish between the Democratic candidates and see where they stand on key issues.

The Providence Journal posed 13 questions, about key topics like the environment, the economy, student loan debt and more, to each candidate who will appear on the Democratic primary ballot. You'll find their written responses, presented in alphabetical order by last name. (One candidate, Spencer Dickinson, did not respond to the questionnaire.

Answers have been edited only to conform with AP style, and not for spelling or grammar. Additionally, each candidate was informed that they would have no more than 75 words to answer each question.

A separate questionnaire has been distributed to the two candidates who will appear on the Republican primary ballot. Their responses will appear online next week.
