United Regional Health Care System and Vernon College nursing programs are collaborating in an innovative apprenticeship program for nursing students, officials said in a media release Monday.

The goal is to enhance students' clinical experience and bolster the nursing workforce through experience in real-world healthcare settings.

“The LVN Program Apprenticeship Track provides an extraordinary opportunity for students to grow in their nursing knowledge and clinical skills while earning a wage," Dr. Mary Rivard, director of nursing at Vernon College, said in the media release.

The initiative began in January with the first group of students from the licensed vocational nurse program. Students in the apprenticeship program will gain proficiency through extensive clinical experience.

"The additional clinical hours will allow the student to obtain more hands-on experience, leading to a greater understanding of the nursing profession and practice," Rivard said.

A shortage of nurses has been one of the biggest challenges in healthcare. To address it, URHCS and Vernon College joined forces to bridge the gap between nursing education and employment.

"With a vision to empower the next generation of healthcare professionals, this innovative initiative aims to attract top-tier nursing talent while fostering a supportive learning environment," URHCS Chief Nursing Officer Anne D. Dabovich said in the media release.

The apprenticeship program provides a comprehensive learning experience blending theory with practice. Experienced United Regional nursing professionals carefully guide and mentor participating LVN students from Vernon College.

"By nurturing the growth of these future caregivers, our organization anticipates a positive impact on patient outcomes, staff retention, and overall operational efficiency," Dabovich said.

United Regional and Vernon College nursing programs are committed to the continued success of the apprenticeship, and they look forward to nurturing many more groups of skilled nurses in years to come, officials said.
