Learn new skills at your library with Universal Class

The mission of the Abilene Public Library is to provide materials, services, and programs, to help community residents obtain information which meets their personal, educational, professional and recreational needs.

One of the ways we try to address the educational and professional needs of the local community is to offer free access to Universal Class. Accredited by International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), this online service offers access to a growing catalog of classes that allow instructors from all over the world to share their knowledge.

Benefits from taking courses include regular instructor feedback, online tracking of progress and the opportunity to earn a CEU Certificate of Course Completion. Continuing education units can help professionals keep up to date on changes in their field or may even be required to renew a license or certification.

Of course, the courses can also be taken for personal goals, or just for fun. The only recommended prerequisite is the ability to read and write at high school level, or above.

The various courses are organized by area of study and range from accounting to writing skills. Number of courses per topic ranges from 10 to over 100. The courses are further divided into subcategories that specify course content.

For example, the "Web Development" area features over 35 courses. These are in turn organized under seven topics including "Adobe Training" and "Software Programs." Learn basics such as preparing an effective workplace email or more advanced skills through "Introduction to CSS."

The "Craft and Hobbies" area offers over 70 classes. Learn to bake, draw or sew at your pace with lesson assignments and exams. "Sewing 101," for example, includes 15 lessons beginning with sewing basics and culminating with completing a pair of pants with a lapped zipper, waistband and a blindstitch hem.

Patrons often ask for self-help books. These are spread throughout our nonfiction area depending on the topics. Or, just visit the self-help area on Universal Class where all topics are conveniently grouped together.

Explore the fascinating world of essential oils with "Aromatherapy 101." The learning outcomes include familiarity with carrier oils and making your own scents.

"Feng Shui 101" demystifies this Chinese art that uses environmental balance to create well-being. For example, learn how the placement of decor, doors, furniture and windows can all impact your overall harmony.

We, of course, highly recommend the course "Speed Reading 101." Tackle that multi book series in record time and retain the content. Lessons also enable you to wade through emails more quickly.
