The Collins-Maxwell football team couldn't get much going against No. 6 Baxter in a non-district 8-player football rivalry game Friday at Rich Strouse Field in Huxley.

The Spartans were held to 111 yards in a 63-16 loss.

"Baxter has a solid team and we knew we were going to need to be sound defensively to keep their offense in check," Collins-Maxwell head coach Greg Davis said. "We were able to put ourselves into good situations on both sides of the ball, but unfortunately were unable to get that key play to either keep the chains moving or get the ball back to our offense."

Collins-Maxwell dropped to 3-3 with the loss. Baxter remained perfect on the season at 6-0.

Here is what we learned from the Spartans' setback Friday night.

Spartan offense goes flat

Collins-Maxwell tied the game at 8-8 in the first quarter on a 2-yard Cooper Wierson touchdown run and 2-point conversion by Josef Dvorak.

The Spartans went without another touchdown until the fourth quarter. Their only other scores came on a safety and a 23-yard Josef Dvorak touchdown run in the fourth quarter after they had given up 49 unanswered points to fall behind 57-8.

Collins-Maxwell only had 73 yards rushing on 34 carries. The Spartans also struggled through the air, completing just 5 of 20 passes for 38 yards with an interception.

Wierson took over for Jace Huntrods and handled the quarterbacking duties for Collins-Maxwell. In addition to his 38 yards passing, Wierson finished with 11 rushing.

Dvorak ran for 36 yards on 10 carries and Austin Boege 14 on two attempts. Dvorak also had one reception for 13 yards, Luke Huntrods made a 15-yard reception and Dane Beattie caught two passes for seven yards.

Second quarter dooms Spartans

The Collins-Maxwell defense struggled after the first quarter.

Baxter erupted for 35 points in the second quarter to put the game away. The Bolts ended up with 453 total yards, 251 coming on the ground and 202 through the air.

Luke Huntrods had 8.5 tackles and one tackle for loss, Dvorak 6.5 tackles and one stop behind the line and William Booth three tackles and one tackle for loss during the game for Collins-Maxwell. Beattie added 4.5 tackles and Blake Huntrods and Nate Smith three apiece.
