What we learned from the Nevada basketball team's split with Newton, wrestlers' loss to R-S

The Nevada girls basketball team picked up a non-conference victory and the boys never got going in suffering a lopsided loss during a doubleheader at Newton Jan. 13.

The Cub girls pulled off a 39-25 victory. They improved their overall record to 8-5.

The Nevada boys were overpowered by a 75-48 score. The loss put the Cubs at 8-3 on the season.

The Nevada wrestling team participated in a Heart of Iowa Conference dual with Roland-Story Jan. 13 at the Nevada High School Field House. The shorthanded Cubs were only able to muster 2 victories in a 69-12 loss.

The Cub wrestlers fell to 0-8 in dual competition with the loss.

Here is what we learned from the Cubs' basketball split and wrestling loss:

Girls dominate second half

The Nevada girls outclassed Newton over the final two quarters to take down the Cardinals.

Defense carried the evening for the Cub girls. They held Newton to just seven points over the final two quarters to pull away after only leading by two points at the half.

Nevada held Newton to 16 % shooting from the field. They also posted a 35-30 rebounding advantage and had a 6-2 edge in second-chance points, which was more than enough to offset a 1 of 13 shooting night from 3-point range and 21 turnovers.

Dunham, Hazlitt lead balanced attack

Maddie Dunham and Shelbi Hazlitt led a well-rounded offensive effort by the Nevada girls.

Dunham and Hazlitt both scored 11 points. Dunham also pulled down 8 rebounds and blocked 1 shot and Hazlitt finished with 4 boards and 2 blocks.

Alexandria Arnaud chipped in 6 points and assists apiece plus 3 steals and 2 blocks. Bridget Cahill chipped in 5 points, Emma Strottman 4 points and Tessa Borwick 2 points and 5 rebounds.

Boys sputter at the end of each half

The Nevada boys were doomed by poor finishes to each half.

The Cub boys were outscored 22-13 in the second quarter to fall behind 39-28 at the half.

Newton increased its lead to 14 points after three quarters. The Cardinals then slammed the door on the Cubs by going on a 20-7 run over the final eight minutes.

The Cub boys allowed Newton to shoot 51.7 % from the field. They also committed 21 turnovers and only forced 7.

Rhodes plays well in defeat

Carson Rhodes continued to play strong in the paint for Nevada.

The talented 6-7 center had another double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. He also blocked 4 shots and came away with 1 steal.

James Edwards and Colin Memmer both scored 11 points for Nevada. Edwards also pulled down 6 rebounds.

Weber, Vincent prevail on the mat

Kaden Weber and Camdan Vincent were the only Cubs to come out on top against a deep and talented Roland-Story wrestling team Jan. 13.

Weber moved to 20-0 on the season at 106 pounds. Ranked sixth in Class 2A, he pinned Roland-Story's Levi Webb in 18 seconds.

Vincent moved to 9-8 at 285 with a win by fall over Roland-Story's Colin Hansen. Vincent pinned Hansen in 5:56.
