What we learned from Nevada's showing at the HOIC wrestling meet: Two Cubs win championships

Nevada placed seventh out of eight teams at the Heart of Iowa Conference wrestling meet Friday at the Nevada High School Field House in Nevada.

The Cubs produced two individual champions Friday night. They finished with 83 points.

Roland-Story won the conference team championship with 210 points. West Marshall was second with 197 points.

Nevada also went 1-2 at a quadrangular dual meet in Perry Jan. 18. The Cubs defeated South Hamilton (42-36) for their first dual win of the season and fell to Perry (63-18) and Ogden (53-24) in going to 1-10.

Here is what we learned from Nevada's performance at the HOIC meet:

Vincent gets his title

Nevada senior Camdan Vincent went into Friday's meet having placed second twice at the HOIC meet. He'd also come up just short of a tournament championship multiple times this season.

Vincent finally got his due Friday. He placed first at 285, pinning South Hamilton's Austin Busch and Roland-Story's Colin Hansen to win a conference championship in his final try.

"The last couple years I just fell short," Vincent said. "There's a little edge I've been missing and tonight I just thought about what I needed to do to win."

Fun fact: Vincent said it was "really good" Bebop music that pushed him over the edge.

"It got me in my groove," Vincent said. "I was just ready to go."

After receiving a bye in the quarterfinals Vincent pinned Busch in three minutes, 16 seconds. He stuck Hansen in 5:41.

Vincent improved to 14-5 with the championship.

Weber remains perfect

Nevada sophomore Kaden Weber went to 26-0 at 106 pounds. Weber, ranked ninth at 106, won his first two matches by fall before defeating West Marshall's Shane Hanford by a 7-2 decision in the championship match Friday.

"It feels great, especially beating Shane," Weber said. "Him and I went at it. First time (conference champion). I don't think I lot of people thought I'd have the season I'm having. It feels good going in as the underdog this year trying to prove something."

Weber pinned Perry's Aidan Carlson in 32 seconds and Roland-Story's Levi Webb in 2:37 to reach the finals.

Mosinski places third

Payton Mosinski took third at 160 for Nevada. Mosinski finished with two wins by decision and his only loss came against eventual champion Hesston Johnson of Roland-Story.

Mosinski defeated Saydel's Cooper Lindahl by a 4-1 decision, lost to Johnson and came back with a 10-6 victory over West Marshall's Luke Coulter in the third-place match to go to 7-6 on the season.

Matthew Sallee placed sixth at 132 with a 1-3 record. Sallee recorded 6-4 win by sudden victory over Prairie City-Monroe's Hewitt Brinegar in the quarterfinals.

Christian Decoske went 1-3 to place sixth at 138. Decoske pinned Saydel's Adrian Vega-Munoz in 26 seconds during the consolation first round.

Carson Reed came in fifth at 195 with a 1-2 record. Reed won the fifth-place match over Perry's Samuel Hernandez by a 6-2 decision.

Kobe Thipasouk was fourth at 220. Thipasouk went 0-2 with two byes.
