What we learned from Roland-Story's basketball sweeps over Nevada and South Hardin: Boys fall to GVC

The Roland-Story basketball teams swept Nevada and South Hardin last week and the Norse boys fell short against No. 1 (Class 1A) Grand View Christian Saturday.

The Roland-Story girls, ranked 10th in Class 3A, defeated Nevada by a 44-30 score and the boys edged the Cubs in a 44-42 battle at the Nevada High School Field House in Nevada Jan. 18. On Jan. 20 the two Norse teams traveled to Eldora and swept South Hardin, with the girls winning by a 59-36 score and the boys pulling off an 82-55 victory.

The boys took on GVC at the Gilbert tournament. They suffered a 72-53 loss to the Thunder.

The girls improved to 7-1 in the HOIC with the win over Nevada and 11-3 overall after defeating South Hardin. The boys went to 8-0 in the conference with the win over Nevada and fell to 12-2 after the loss to GVC.

Here is what we learned from the two sweeps and the boys' loss to GVC:

Norse hold tough against Nevada

The Roland-Story scored a pair of big HOIC road victories over Nevada Jan. 18. The boys completed a season sweep of the Cubs with a thrilling victory and the girls outlasted a gritty Nevada squad.

The Roland-Story boys led 32-26 after three quarters then held off the Cubs down the stretch. The Norsemen won despite shooting just 37 % from the field and finishing with just 3 offensive rebounds.

Isaiah Naylor had 15 points and 3 assists and Jonovan Wilkinson 10 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals for the boys against Nevada. Luke Patton added 9 points and 6 rebounds.

The Roland-Story girls overcame a 29-23 rebounding deficit by forcing 18 turnovers and only committing 7. The Norse also held Nevada to 30.6 % shooting from the field to offset a 9 of 20 showing from the foul line.

A big first quarter was the difference maker for the girls. Roland-Story led 17-1 after the first quarter and 32-9 through three quarters before Nevada went on a 21-12 run over the final eight minutes to make the final score more respectable.

Reece Johnson had 15 points, four assists and three steals and Reagan Barkema 13 points, five rebounds and three assists and steals apiece for the Norse.

Alexandria Arnaud led the Nevada girls with 10 points and six rebounds.

Both teams roll past South Hardin

The Roland-Story boys had no issues with South Hardin after shooting 50 % from the field, pulling down 20 offensive rebounds and limiting the Tigers to 3 trips to the foul line.

Wilkinson and Patton were monsters inside against South Hardin. Wilkinson totaled 21 points and 10 rebounds and Patton 18 points and 16 boards.

Naylor added 15 points and 4 assists.

The Roland-Story girls jumped out to another big lead against South Hardin. They led 35-11 at the half and coasted to victory.

The girls made 13 3-pointers and recorded a 25-15 rebounding advantage.

Barkema finished with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists against South Hardin. Madi Bauer had 12 points and 7 rebounds off the bench, Kamryn Lande finished with 11 points and 4 rebounds and Elizabeth Ihle 9 points.

Boys struggle with GVC

The Roland-Story boys had no answers for GVC. The Norsemen hung tough in the first half, only trailing 34-29 at the break, but they ran out of gas over the final two quarters.

GVC shot 46.6 % from the field and held Roland-Story to 34.4 % shooting. The Thunder also made 12 3-pointers and limited Roland-Story to 5 trips to the foul line.

Naylor had 16 points and 3 assists and Patton 15 points and 10 boards in the loss. Daniel Tobiloba recorded 9 points, 22 rebounds and 4 blocks, Manny Hammonds 18 points and 6 assists, Josh Sanderson 17 points and 4 assists and Josh Baucum 16 points, 4 assists and 3 steals for GVC.
