What we learned from Week 1 high school football action across Oklahoma

Choctaw impresses in win vs. Edmond Santa Fe

La’Trell Ray took the pitch from quarterback Steele Wasel at the Choctaw goal line.

The Choctaw defense had just made a fourth-down stop, and it was the offense's turn to make a big play.

Ray, a speedy running back for the Yellowjackets, saw the corner open up and quickly turned up field. He made one man miss and was off to the races, scoring on a 97-yard run to break the game open.

Ray’s run helped Class 6A-II third-ranked Choctaw take down Class 6A-I No. 7 Edmond Santa Fe 37-20 at Choctaw Stadium on Friday night.

“It’s probably one of the better runs I’ve seen in a long time,” Choctaw coach Jake Corbin said. “He was able to show off his wheels."

Even with the run, Corbin was most pleased with his defense and how they held up against Edmond Santa Fe (0-2).

“They were able to slow a very physical Edmond Santa Fe team,” Corbin said, “and were able to make stops when needed to seal the game. I was really proud of how those guys just kept battling.”

Choctaw improved to 1-1 on the season and was a part of one of the most intriguing matchups in Week 1. Here are some other takeaways.

Putnam West 29, Putnam North 21

First-year Putnam West coach Willis Alexander knew it would be a tough matchup with a city rival.

And toughness is what helped Putnam West prevail.

Class 6A-II Putnam West took down No. 7 Putnam North 29-21 in overtime to win its second straight game. Putnam West had been winless since 2018 but now has its best start since 2016. The Putnam West defense forced Putnam North (0-2) to turn the ball over five times.

“We didn’t dominate,” Alexander said. “But I just think overall we made plays when we needed to make plays and made stops when we needed to make stops. More than anything else, I’m really proud with how our kids fought through adversity.”

Putnam West never trailed by more than seven points in the game. Each time Putnam North scored, Putnam West responded.

“In the end,” Alexander said, “we made one more play than they did.”
