EF-1 tornado touches down in west Georgia bringing 90 MPH winds, damage

The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-1 tornado with 90 miles per hour winds touched down in west Georgia during overnight storms Thursday.

The damage survey team told Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Ashley Kramlich the brief, spin-up tornado occurred in Troup County around 4:30 a.m.

NWS says the tornado had a path length of 5.8 miles.

Channel 2′s Tom Regan showed you live on Channel 2 Action News at 5 p.m. a look at the damage in LaGrange from Friday’s storms. The damage ranged from downed trees, and power lines to some structural damage.

Powerful winds smashed a sign and tore off part of the roof of the county health department building. The roof of a brewery across the street partially collapsed. Fortunately, no one was inside.

One homeowner’s house was crushed when a large tree toppled over, destroying the roof and back of the house.

“All of a sudden the whole house started shaking, walls going in and out. We were kind vibrated out of the bed from all the shaking. We didn’t know what to do. It was terrifying,” said homeowner Scott Arrington.

There was also damage to LaGrange College and Callaway Stadium.

The LaGrange community is still picking up the pieces after two EF-2 tornadoes happened last month. The storms damaged hundreds of home in several subdivisions.

No injuries have been reported in connection with the storm.
