Lebanon officials report 10th Street to be repaved. Here's what that means for motorists.

Lebanon city officials are asking that residents use caution as North and South 10th Street undergoes repaving throughout week, causing possible traffic delays.

The repaving from Coleman Park to Poplar Street will occur during the week of Aug. 22, Robin Getz, Lebanon's director of public works, told city council Thursday. The paving of that street is part of PennDOT's multi-year project to resurface Route 72 and Route 422 through the city. Walnut Street was done last year.

Contractors have been working on underground utilities and residential curbs and sidewalks on 10th Street for more than a year. Getz said after the paving project is completed, a 5-year moratorium will be issued forbidding any contactor from digging in the street, except for emergency situations.

Milling of the street is expected to be started on Monday and continue through the week. Traffic will be permitted to travel on the milled street, but Getz recommends that drivers try to avoid the rough road and likely delays, and take an alternate route, when possible.

Affected areas have been posted with "No Parking" signs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. between Aug. 22 and Aug. 26.

Getz advised those who travel on Tenth Street during the milling operation to obey signs, drive slowly, and be aware of highway workers.

The nearly $1.8 million road resurfacing job will be done by New Enterprise Stone and Lime of New Enterprise, Pa.

PennDOT will be paving Ninth Street in 2023. Utility companies have been advised to accomplish work under the street before next summer. The city will spend about $129,000 installing new sidewalk and curbing along city-owned properties on Ninth Street, as well as creating some corner ramps at intersections.

The public works department also has several major stormwater construction projects on their drawing board, which, when completed, will improve the capture of rain water and prevent street flooding.

The Cumberland Street "streetscape", between Fourth Street and 12th Street is another major project scheduled during the coming year. Mayor Sherry Cappello said that work will likely begin in the spring of 2023 and be completed in the fall of that year.

Future paving projects include Lehman Street, from Lincoln Avenue, east to the city line, Maple Street between Ninth and Lincoln streets, Twelfth Street from Cumberland to Guilford, and South Eleventh Street from Washington to Elm.

Getz said the cost of all the projects will be mostly funded grants and other state and federal sources, with only a small percentage being paid from city tax money.

City councilman Brian Martin invited the public to attend the annual car and motorcycle show sponsored by the Community of Lebanon Association on Sunday, August 21. It will take place on Cumberland Street between Fifth and Ninth streets, from noon until 4 p.m., with entertainment between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in front of the City Hall. There is no charge to view the various vehicles.
