Lectures on Carolina's 'Gold' and birds of prey highlight events in Brunswick this week

North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport presents its "Third Tuesday" talk Bringing Gold Back To The Carolina Coast: Tidewater Grain and the Revival of Carolina Gold Rice.

The "Third Tuesday" lecture series presented by the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport will be on "Bringing Gold Back To The Carolina Coast: Tidewater Grain and the Revival of Carolina Gold Rice." Tommy Wheeler of Tidewater Grain will be the speaker at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 18 at the Southport Community Building, 223 E. Bay St., Southport.

Learn how the company brought the highly sought after Carolina Gold rice back to the Carolina coast. Carolina Gold rice is renowned for its soft texture and nutty flavor, grew incredibly well in the marshy tidewaters of the Lower Cape Fear 250 years ago. Plantations such as Orton became well known for their Carolina Gold, a commodity whose success rested on the backs of enslaved African labor.

The Sandbar Lecture series presents Rocking Raptors by the Cape Fear Raptor Center, 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 18. Join Faye Russell from the Cape Fear Raptor Center and learn about raptors and the important roles these birds of prey play in the ecosystem. Live animal representatives, including owls and hawks.

Sunset Beach Sound Waves concert series

Chocolate Chip & Company will play soul music, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 19 at the Sunset Beach Sound Waves concert series to be held at the Village Park gazebo, 1791 Queen Anne St. Free.

American Legion Leland Post 68

The American Legion Leland Post 68 will hold its monthly meeting Thursday, July 20 at the Magnolia Greens Golf Course, located at 1800 Tommy Jacobs Drive, Leland. General meeting at 6 p.m. in the banquet building next to Blossoms Restaurant. The speaker will be the newly elected Commander Dan Fortini speaking on the Post's plans for 2023. Anyone wishing to have dinner at Blossoms Restaurant prior to the meeting should arrive at 4:45 p.m. All veterans are welcome to attend.

Oak Island concert series

The Oak Island "Bands by the Beach" free concert series will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, July 21 at the Middleton Park Amphitheater, 102 SE 47th St. Too Much Sylvia will play beach, funky '70s Motown, retro '80s music.

Ocean Isle Beach Summer Concert

The Chocolate Chip & Company band will make its second Brunswick stop of the week at the Ocean Isle Beach Summer Concert, also known as the Peggy Hughes Concert Series. The band is set to play from 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, July 21 at Town Center Park, 11 E Second St. Free.

Holden Beach Concert Series

It's time to boogie once again at the Holden Beach Concert Series. The Band of Oz plays beach music, 6:30-8 p.m. Sunday, July 23 at the pavilion under the Holden Beach bridge. Refreshments available for purchase. Bring a chair or beach towel. Free. 910-842-6488.
