Boys

Rejonis, a three-time state champion middle-distance star, won the 500 (1:12.42) and the 800 (2:14.09) as the Leopards' boys scored 139 points to pull away from runner-up North Hagerstown (103.5) and third-place South Hagerstown (97). Smithsburg won the county boys team title for the first time since 2007.

Smithsburg also got victories from Sean Milligan in the 3,200 (10:32.10), Ethan Caudo in the 55 hurdles (9.44) and Owen Brophy in the pole vault (11 feet).

“These kids are not only into their individual performances, but also the team aspect,” said Leopards head coach Stacey Crawford. “We needed the heavy hitters, the 10-pointers, but we needed the sixes, fours, threes, twos and ones, too. Liam Fisher plugs away and gets second, third and fourth consistently. Ryan Linn has come out and filled every hole we needed, with the 500 and the 4x400. He steps up and does whatever we ask. Ethan Caudo stepped up big in the hurdles and was a county champ.

“The boys, we preach to them to be a student of the sport and understand how we can pack together points. They executed everything we asked of them. We're really pleased with how they all performed tonight, and we are really looking forward to the rest of the season.”

For the Hubs, Alex Duncan won the 1,600 in 4:52.43 and the 4x800 relay team of Donovan Baldwin, Henry Lewis, Ian Watts and Matt Stine won in 9:54.39.

Cole Schlotterbeck won two individual events and anchored two winning relays for South. He claimed victories in the 55 (6.66) and 300 (37.14). The 4x200 relay team of Kaleb Dillow, Jacob Stoner, Rodney Aning and Schlotterbeck won in 1:40.25, and the 4x400 team of Dillow, Stoner, Lorenzo Decastro and Schlotterbeck won in 3:50.45 — edging Smithsburg in a photo finish. Ethan VanMeter won the shot put with a throw of 42-8½.

Tyler Josenhans won the high jump with a leap of 5-8 for Clear Spring.

Girls

Yaukey won the 55 (7.65) and the pole vault (7-9) as the Warriors' girls scored 159 points. Smithsburg finished second with 128 points, and Williamsport was third with 61 points. Boonsboro won the title for the first time since a run of seven straight from 2012 to 2018.

“The county title is always nice, and it's great to win it again,” said Warriors head coach Becky Ward. “We knew it would be pretty close with Smithsburg and we tried to maximize what we did and get as many points as possible.

“(Yaukey) started vaulting a little bit in the spring last year and some this year in practice and in the first meet. She didn't do it in the second meet. I kind of pushed her to continue it, and now she's enjoying it. She has the speed and the strength.”

The Warriors won fewer events than Smithsburg, but used their depth — a Boonsboro staple during Ward's tenure, which will end at the conclusion of this season — to prevail.

“Cami Row did the high jump for the first time ever and scored some points (finishing sixth). That goes a long way,” Ward said. “Smithsburg has a great team. We knew it was going to be tough.”
