Lee's Hawaiian Islander, a beloved tiki bar in Lyndhurst, is for sale
Lee's Hawaiian Islander, a funky tiki bar that has been a mainstay in Lyndhurst for nearly a half-century, is up for sale.
The building is on the market for $2.3 million.
A manager at the restaurant said it was put up for sale about three weeks ago "but it hasn't been sold yet."
Lee's Hawaiian, which primarily serves Chinese American food, was popular for its weekend karaoke, kitschy decor, potent cocktails and pu-pu platters.
Steven Lee, a Chinese immigrant, founded the place. His son, Danny Lee, helps run it.
Review with photos: Lee's Hawaiian Islander might not be gourmet but, man, it's fun
It is far from pretentious. Its decor includes a wall of gigantic rocks from which water trickles down (yup, indoor waterfalls); a bunch of "tiki god" masks; colorful fake birds on fake tree branches; little white Christmas-type lights just about everywhere, and plastic flowers on the walls and table vases (no waterm because they're fake, of course).
And its food is far from gourmet. Jell-O and store-bought ice cream were the dessert choices during one visit.
But many love the place. It is a true Bergen institution, a throwback to a time when menus weren't saturated with mostly meaningless terms such as seasonal, heirloom, heritage, artisan, sustainable and that well-worn designation: farm-to-table. At Lee's Hawaiian, bartenders are called bartenders, not mixologists. And yes, the drinks come with little paper umbrellas.
