ORLANDO — The struggles continued for the Leesburg Lightning Saturday as it fell to the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs 8-0, in a seven-inning mercy rule game at Orlando Lake Highland Prep.

The loss — the fourth straight for the Lightning — marked the team's first four-game skid since June 14-20, 2019.

The Lightning could not generate any offense as the team had just two hits and four total baserunners. The loss marks the second time Leesburg has been shut out in its last four contests.

Senior infielder Noah Best and junior infielder Gabe Santiago recorded the only two hits for Leesburg.

Leesburg’s starting pitcher — Heston Mosley — allowed three runs on three hits with three strikeouts. He was tagged with the loss.

In relief for the Bolts was freshman right-hander Cody Bruns and senior righty Casey Daiss. The pair combined for the final two innings of work, giving up five runs on five hits and striking out three.

Winter Park wasted no time getting on the board as they struck for two runs in the bottom of the first. An error followed by a hit-by-pitch set up outfielder Kyle Mock for an RBI single to left field.

Later in the sixth, a two-run home run from Dawgs first baseman Edgar Alvarez would extend the lead to 5-0. Winter Park stepped on the gas in the seventh as they put up three more runs to complete the eight run mercy win in seven innings.

The Diamond Dawgs improved to 6-2 on the year after wrapping up  the three-game sweep. They have won their last four in a row to move into a tie with the Seminole County Snappers for first place in the FCSL standings.

Leesburg — and the rest of the league — was off Sunday. The Lightning will travel to Sanford at 6:30 p.m. Monday to play the Seminole County Snappers.
