Legal Sports Betting Debuts In Pittsburgh

Find out here what you need to know about the Rivers Casino's new sportsbook.

PITTSBURGH, PA - Legalized sports betting arrives in Pennsylvania’s two largest cities Thursday, at the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh and SugarHouse Casino in Philadelphia. After a soft opening with limited hours Thursday and Friday, regular sports wagering hours at both casinos are expected to begin on Saturday.

A U.S. Supreme Court ruling in May paved the way for states to legalize sports betting. In Pennsylvania, the state’s 12 casinos can operate a sportsbook after paying a $10 million fee.

Rivers Casino’s sportsbook initial operating hours will be as follows:

  • Monday–Thursday: 10 a.m. to midnight.

  • Friday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • Saturday: 9 a.m. to 2 a.m.

  • Sunday: 9 a.m. to midnight.

According to the casino, here’s what you need to know about the sportsbook:

  • The sportsbook is located next to the High Limit Table Games and 446 Club.

  • The sportsbook is cash only. Bets can be made by a sportsbook writer and in the future, kiosks will be in available to place bets.

  • You can tell if you’ve won your bet by watching games in the sportsbook area or seeing one of the sportsbook writers.

  • Winners have one year from the date of their tickets (365 days) to claim their winnings.

  • You don’t have to stay for the entire game if you bet on it.

  • The minimum and maximum bet will vary based on each specific bet, but on average a minimum bet will be $5.

  • Winnings can be redeemed at the sportsbook during open hours of operations. After hour winning bets can be claimed at the cashier cage.

  • You can initially bet on football, hockey, basketball, boxing and soccer; additional sports will be added soon. There will be no wagering on horse racing at the casino.

  • The types of bets will vary, but options include money line, spread, over-under and parlay.

  • You must be 21 or older to be on Rivers Casino property and to place a bet.

  • An unlimited number of bets can be made at one time.
