Legendary Composer and Four-Time Oscar Winner André Previn Dead at 89

Legendary composer and pianist André Previn has died.

The 10-time Grammy Award winner, who also earned four Oscars throughout his lifetime, died in his Manhattan home on Thursday, the Associated Press reports. He was 89.

Previn’s love for music started at an early age after he and his family fled Nazi Germany for the United States. He later moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a composer and arranger at MGM and other musical units in Hollywood, the Associated Press reported.

Previn is known for his orchestrations on classic musicals like 1964’s My Fair Lady and romantic comedy The Fortunate Cookie in 1996.

In 1967, Previn was hired as the music director for the Houston Symphony Orchestra. His beloved opera A Streetcar Named Desire premiered the following year at the San Francisco Opera, which scored the Grand Prix du Disque.

The famed musician won his first Grammy Award in 1958 for best soundtrack album, dramatic picture score or original cast for Gigi. Previn also won an Academy Award for best music for Gigi in 1958 and in 1959 he won the same award for Porgy & Bess.

His immense impact on music was recognized in 2010 when he was honored with a lifetime achievement award.

In addition to his many accolades, Previn was a devoted father to 10 children and was married five times.

In 1952 Previn married jazz singer Betty Bennett and the former couple shared two daughters Alicia and Claudia Previn. Previn and Bennett divorced in 1957.
