Legends 2019 Brings Legendary Crowds and Design Talent to La Cienega Design Quarter

Throughout the La Cienega Design Quarter last week, designers, makers, and clients weaved in and out of showrooms, design talks, and cocktail parties for Legends 2019. The three-day event, from May 7 through May 9, featured some of the year’s biggest happenings in L.A.’s design calendar, from new collection launches to ticketed panel discussions with some icons of interior design. For anyone who didn’t make it to Legends last week, these are the highlights you missed.

Furth Yashar and Farrow & Ball Host Exhibit of Peter Shire’s Work

On Tuesday, the Farrow & Ball showroom, in collaboration with designer Furth Yashar, hosted an exhibition of artist Peter Shire’s work.“Peter Shire: Good Taste” featured a series of the artist’s chromatic works. The selection showed the ways in which color can be used to enhance and improve various designs. The show was followed by a reception cohosted by California Home & Design that had an impressive turnout of people.

Bunny Williams and Suzanne Rheinstein Honored as Living Legends

This year, LCDQ Legends unveiled a new honor for designers. The Living Legends award was bestowed on Bunny Williams and Suzanne Rheinstein, who were honored at a lunch on Wednesday at the Legendary Green Room. The party also offered guests a signed copy of Bunny Williams’s latest book, Love Affairs With Houses. Each designer also participated in a separate Q&A discussion about their work and career—Williams’s session just ahead of the lunch at Dragonette Ltd., and Rheinstein’s the next day at Jonas.

Chairish Hosts “Love It or Hate It” Panel

A crowd favorite at Legends was the return of Chairish’s “Love It or Hate It” panel game, in which some of the top designers in the industry weigh in on current trends with a flip of a paddle. Moderated by Anna Brockway, Chairish’s cofounder and president, the panel included Nate Berkus, Jeremiah Brent, Leanne Ford, Bobby Berk, Mary MacDonald, Nathan Turner, and Robert Rufino. The game elicited a range of hilarious responses from the designers, covering everything from the group’s general love of decorative plates and bar carts to a disdain for gallery walls. Together, the group offered their hot takes, like Rufino’s suggestion that tufted headboards look “like a coffin,” and Berkus’s opinion on terrazzo: “It’s so annoying to install. It takes so long to do it correctly.”

Touring the Expertly Designed Windows of the Design District

Throughout the LCDQ, showrooms, galleries, and event spaces had their windows taken over by some of the best designers in the country. Windows were transformed to fit the theme of Legends this year, “Legendary: Icons of Design.” Creations by designers like Neal Beckstedt, Sasha Bickoff, and nearly 40 more participants lined the sidewalks.

Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s Closing Cocktail Party

Before Legends closed out another successful year, visitors gathered at Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s West Hollywood atelier for cocktails and canapés to fête the finale of the design affair. Throughout the designer’s studio, Bullard had strewn low-hung lighting pieces from his most recent collection with Corbett Lighting. Tim Street-Porter and Annie Kelly were also at the event, signing copies of their latest book, Splash: The Art of the Swimming Pool.
