Legion auxiliary suggests ways to care for vets

Nov. 10—The American Legion Auxiliary is emphasizing ways to reach out to veterans who may need assistant on this Veterans Day weekend.

"We want as many veterans as possible to take part in these (local) events and to take advantage of the special offers at restaurants and stores, but we know not all veterans will be able. Consider those veterans who can't easily leave their home, who feel isolated, or just don't feel comfortable going out alone," states a press release from the organizations's national headquarters in Indianapolis.

The organize asks people to make a difference by giving a veteran a call or a text or take a veteran out for a meal.

The group is also working to help veterans more comfortable reaching out for mental health support and encouraging people to get peer-to-peer support.

The organization urges people to reaching out to a veteran if you think they may be struggling.

Area American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars also emphasize the importance of helping veterans receive the assistance they need.

A growing resource for the Ashtabula County veterans community is the Feed our Vets chapter in Ashtabula. The group sponsors a monthly food giveaway to help veterans in need and have a network of volunteers to make sure the effort continues.
