Legion baseball roundup: Willmar cruises past Waconia in playoffs

Jul. 21—BUFFALO — The Willmar American Legion baseball team advanced in the Division I Sub-State playoffs with a 10-0, five-inning victory over Waconia on Wednesday night.

Willmar (15-4) got home runs from Sam Etterman and Hunter Magnuson as well as five shutout innings from Ian Koosman.

Koosman struck out 10 and walked three, allowing two hits, in five innings.

Reed Klatt and Tate Wischnack had hits for the Post 150 Lions.

Willmar (15-4) next plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday against the winner of Hutchinson and Buffalo, which was the late game Wednesday in Buffalo.

Tournament play continues in the double-elimination tournament through Sunday, if needed. At stake is a berth in the state Division I tournament in Burnsville.

Waconia plays at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Buffalo against Annandale in an elimination game.

Tri-Town moved to within one victory of advancing to the next round of the Division II playoffs after beating Kimball in five innings late Tuesday at Kimball.

Tri-Town had 19 hits. Josh Kingery led the way. He went 4-for-5 with two runs and five RBIs, homering twice, tripling and doubling. Jaxon Drange-Leyendecker also homered for the Black Sox, going 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs.

The teams play at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the best-of-three series at Kingery Field in Atwater. A third and final game, if needed, immediately follows Thursday.

Howard Lake knocked off Sacred Heart/MACCRAY late Tuesday in Howard Lake in the Central Sub-State Division II tournament.

The teams play at 5 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart in Game 2 of the best-of-three series. If a third game is needed, it immediately follows the first one on Thursday.

The Post 145 Lakers scored in the bottom of the sixth after the Scarlets tied it up in the top of the fifth with two runs.
