Legion baseball roundup: Willmar drops regular-season finale

Jul. 18—WILLMAR — The Willmar American Legion baseball team took a loss in its regular-season finale on Saturday.

New Ulm put up four runs in the top of the fourth inning en route to a 6-3 win over 10th-ranked Post 167 at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Scoreless through three innings, New Ulm took the lead in the fourth after a two-run home run by Carter Lang. Later in the inning, Evan Wiltscheck scored on a passed ball, and Isaiah Rieser hit an RBI single.

Jaden Drill was 3-for-4 for New Ulm with three doubles, a run and an RBI. Starter Grant Burns got the victory after striking out five in 6-1/3 innings.

Five different Willmar players — Sam Etterman, Ian Koosman, Hunter Magnuson, Alex Schramm and Jason Malmgren — got hits in the loss. Etterman, Magnuson and Malmgren each had an RBI. Cayden Hansen scored a run. He was also hit with the loss after five strikeouts over four innings.

Post 167 earned the top seed in the DI Sub-State 15 tournament. They begin postseason play at 6:30 p.m. Monday against Mound at Bill Taunton Stadium.

The Tri-Town Black Sox won the DII Central Sub-State Central Pod following a win over Albany at Kingery Field in Atwater.

Connor Barker put a beating on the baseball. He finished 4-for-4 with two home runs — a solo homer in the third and a grand slam in the sixth. Barker had five RBis and scored three runs.

Jack Peterson got the win on the mound after striking out nine over 5-2/3 innings. He was also 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Tri-Town opens a best-of-three series with North Pod champion Kimball at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kimball. Games 2 and 3, if necessary, will be played Thursday at Atwater.

Sacred Heart/MACCRAY reached the DII Central Sub-State final four after winning the South Pod with a victory over Redwood Falls at Sacred Heart.

Brooks Asche and Tyler Froland combined to hold Redwood Falls to four hits. Asche got the win for the Scarlets after tallying seven strikeouts over 6-1/3 innings. Froland got the final two outs, keeping Redwood Falls off the bases.

Dreyer Homan led Sacred Heart/MACCRAY's offense, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run. Carter Rice also drove in two runs, finishing 1-for-2.

The Scarlets kick off a best-of-three series with East Pod champion Howard Lake Tuesday at Howard Lake. Games 2 and 3, if necessary, will take place Thursday in Sacred Heart.
