Legion baseball tournament: Tri-Town earns a return trip to state

Jul. 25—HOWARD LAKE — The Tri-Town Black Sox have earned a return trip to the state American Legion Baseball Tournament.

The Black Sox beat Howard Lake 6-0 on Saturday, getting a complete-game four-hitter from Jack Peterson and another big offensive game from Josh Kingery to win the Central Sub-State Division II title.

Tri-Town plays Dillworth-Glyndon-Felton in the state Division II tournament at 4 p.m. Friday in Luverne.

"We're really excited," Tri-Town head coach Chris Fellows said. "We have some great confidence behind us now getting there back-to-back (years).

"We're looking forward to it."

Tri-Town, made up of players from Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City High School, took second in the state tournament last August.

Peterson struck out 10 and walked no one, allowing four hits.

Kingery went 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs. He led the game off with a home run and also hit another shot as well as a double. Peterson and Terrell Rinne each added two hits for Tri-Town.

Jumping out to a 9-1 lead after three innings, Morris was able to withstand a comeback from Kerkhoven to win the Division II West Central Sub-State championship at Marthaler Field in Glenwood.

Durgin Decker was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs for Morris. Brett Hanson went 1-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. From the leadoff spot, Brandon Jergenson finished 1-for-3 with three runs and a pair of stolen bases.

Kerkhoven earned its way into the West Central championship after beating Ashby 12-1 in an elimination game Saturday.

Hunter Wilts led Kerkhoven's batters, finishing 2-for-2 with a double, three runs and an RBI. Chase Magaard also had two hits, going 2-for-2 with a double. Isaac Rudningen drove in a pair of runs and scored another, finishing 1-for-4.

The Tri-Town Black Sox opened the best-of-three DII Central Sub-State championship series with a five-inning victory over Howard Lake at Kingery Field in Atwater.

Pitcher Josh Kingery got the complete-game victory for Tri-Town. He struck out eight while giving up one run on three hits and one walk. He was also 1-for-3 with three runs.

Tri-Town out-hit Howard Lake 13-3.

Jaxon Behm hit three doubles for the Black Sox, going 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Connor Barker was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Logan Straumann drove in three runs and scored another in a 2-for-4 effort.

Brett Hanson threw a complete-game shutout for Morris as they beat Kerkhoven to advance to the DII West Central Sub-State championship at Marthaler Field in Glenwood.

Hanson held Kerkhoven to four hits with no walks, striking out two. Durgin Decker drove in both of Morris' runs, finishing 1-for-3.

Luke Jeseritz was 2-for-2 for Kerkhoven. Jaiden Henjum and Isaac Rudningen were both 1-for-3, with Henjum hitting for a double.
