Legion playoff baseball roundup for July 21: Platte-Geddes punches ticket to Region 4B championship

Jul. 22—MENNO, S.D. — Caden Oberbroekling and Dakota Munger combined for a three-hit, 13-strikeout shutout of Mount Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney to advance Platte-Geddes to the Region 4B championship with a 4-0 win on Thursday.

Oberbroekling got the start and went four innings, allowing just one hit and fanning 10 batters. Platte/Geddes plated all four of its runs in the first inning, and six different players recorded a hit.

Brendan Wentland came in relief for MVPCS and threw six and a third innings of shutout ball, allowing four hits and striking out nine.

MVPCS heads to the elimination bracket to face the winner of Parkston and Tabor.

Platte/Geddes will have Friday off before taking on the elimination bracket winner at 2 p.m. Saturday.

MENNO — Parkston kept its hope for a Region 4B title alive Thursday, defeating Alexandria in five innings.

After surrendering six runs in the first two innings, Alexandria responded in the home half of the second with two runs of its own but gave up one in the top of the third and seven in the top of the fifth.

Brayden Jervik got things going early for Parkston with a three-run homer in the first. Ty Neugebauer tossed all five innings for Parkston, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and striking out four.

Jack Doyle went 2-for-3 for Alexandria, but the loss eliminated Alexandria from the Region 4B American Legion tournament.

MENNO — A two-run bottom of the sixth advanced Tabor through an elimination round at the Region 4B tournament Thursday.

Heading into the inning down by one, Trent Herrboldt doubled to get things going before Carter Uecker traded places with him to even things up. Uecker then advanced to third on a wild pitch and was brought in on a sac fly off the bat of Dustin Honomichl for the eventual game-winning run.

Jacob Schott homered during Menno/Scotland's eight-run third inning that gave the squad a lead it didn't relinquish until the sixth.

Nolan Dvorak started on the mound for Tabor and struck out four, while also going 3-for-4 at the plate including a home run.

Tabor will match up with Parkston at 5 p.m. on Friday in an elimination bracket semifinal contest.

HUMBOLDT, S.D. — Canova jumped out to an early lead Thursday against Colton and never looked back.

Luke Koepsell knocked in two of the three first-inning runs on a triple. Koepsell then knocked in another run in the second and helped put Canova out in front 6-3 heading into the third.

Canova tacked on six runs in the final three frames — two in each inning — to put the game away.

Lane Miller hurled two and a third scoreless innings in relief and struck out one. Kieffer Klinkhammer and Kade Shumaker both went 3-for-4 on the night.

With the win, Canova advances to the elimination bracket semifinal to take on Elkton at 6 p.m. Friday.

BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. — Winner/Colome staved off a late, seventh-inning rally from Belle Fourche to edge out a 12-11 victory and advance to the Region 7B championship.

Belle Fourche entered the home half of the seventh down 12-7, but after scoring three runs, the Broncs had runners on second and third with one out.

After Joey Cole forced a pop out for the second out, JT Hahne scored on a passed ball and Gabe Heck advanced to third representing the tying run. Cole forced the third out, though, and left the tying run 90 feet away to send Winner/Colome to the championship.

Cole also had a grand slam in the fourth inning, and Aiden Barfuss added a homer of his own in the sixth for Winner/Colome.

BELLE FOURCHE — Gregory's seven-run outburst in the seventh inning propelled it to a win over Faulkton/Highmore to keep its tournament hopes alive.

Down by two heading into the final frame of the elimination bracket semifinal, loaded the bases off of two walks and a hit by pitch before Sawyer Tietgen drew a walk and drove in a run. Two runs came across to score on a fielder's choice the next play and give Gregory the lead. It tacked on four more runs in the top of the inning before surrendering four in the bottom half, but Rylan Peck struck out the final batter to secure the win.

Peck went 3-for-4 with a triple in the contest. He also scored three runs and drove in three runs. Cade Schick went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs and three RBIs for Faulkton/Highmore.

BELLE FOURCHE — Sawyer Tietgen knocked in the game-winning run on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to send Gregory to the Region 7B championship.

Belle Fourche played four runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 13-8 lead. However, Gregory responded with four of its own in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score within one. After holding the Broncs scoreless in the top of the seventh, Gregory scored the tying and winning run in the home half of the inning.

Rylan Peck hit a home run for Gregory in the second inning for one of his three hits on the contest. Including the first game against Faulkton/Highmore, Peck finished the day 6-for-8 with six RBIs and five runs scored.

Along with the walk-off single, Tietgen added another hit, walked three times and scored twice. Kade Braun ended the game in relief for Gregory, firing an inning and a third of scoreless ball.

For Belle Fourche, both Sean Wahlfeldt and Dalton Davis went 4-for-5 with five RBIs in the contest.

While Belle Fourche is eliminated, Gregory will take on Winner/Colome in the championship Friday in a rematch from Wednesday where Winner/Colome came away with a 3-2 win.
