Legion playoff baseball roundup for July 19: MVPCS opens region tourney with win over Tabor

Jul. 20—MENNO — A six-run first inning helped drive Mount Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica/Stickney to an opening round victory at the Region 4B Legion baseball tournament 11-8 over Tabor.

The game was tied 6-6 after two frames, but MVPCS scored five runs over the next four innings to put the game in hand. Both teams had 10 hits in the contest.

Taite Klumb had a home run for MVPCS and Daniel Laufman had three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored, and Austin Hauge also drove in three runs. Lucas Krogstad started on the mound for the Padres, allowing three hits and four runs in an inning of work. Brendan Wentland earned the win in relief with 2 2/3 innings pitched, three hits and an earned run allowed, plus three strikeouts. Thomas Stange earned a save in relief in the seventh inning.

For Tabor, Trent Herrboldt was the losing pitcher with two hits and two runs allowed in an inning and a third, while leading the team with three hits at the plate. Riley Rothschadl and Trent Herrboldt each had two RBIs, with three hits from Herrboldt and two hits from Rothschadl.

MVPCS (8-5) takes on Alexandria in the second round on Wednesday. Tabor (19-8) plays at 5 p.m. Thursday in an elimination game.

HUMBOLDT — Fourteen hits powered Salem to a first-round win at the Region 5B Legion baseball tournament on Tuesday over Colton.

Bobby Koepsell had three hits and three runs scored, with Gavin Gordon tallying three hits for Salem. Raygen Randall was the winning pitcher on the mound, throwing five innings with eight strikeouts, one run and four hits allowed. Kyle Schoon threw two scoreless innings in relief for Salem.

Kaden Egger took the loss on the mound for Colton, throwing six innings, allowing six runs, 12 hits and striking out six. Cole Fokken had a 2-for-3 game at the plate.

Salem is back in action in winner's bracket play, taking on Humboldt at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

BELLE FOURCHE — Gregory County earned a win at the Region 7B tournament over Faulkton/Highmore with a thrilling win on Tuesday afternoon.

Faulkton/Highmore led 7-3 after two innings, only to see Gregory County tie the game at 7-all in the third and later lead 12-9 after five innings. The Hitmen from Faulkton/Highmore scored four in the top of the sixth for a 13-12 lead, which set the table for Gregory County's final charge.

Trailing going to the bottom of the seventh inning, Gregory County got the first three runners of the inning on base and then got a walk from Ben Witt to tie the game and score Grant Thomas. One batter later, Brogan Glover had an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Trey Murry from third base to win the game.

Ben Witt and Kade Braun drove in three runs each, and were joined by Gunnar Stephens and Bryce Frank as players with at least two hits. Four Gregory County pitchers threw in the game, led off by Witt, Thomas and Glover, with Rylan Peck earning the win in the seventh, recording four outs without allowing a hit or a run and striking out three.

Gregory County (13-2), which is assured a spot in the Class B state tournament as the hosts of the event, will take on Winner/Colome at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the winner's bracket.
