Lehigh Acres, Cape Coral men die in separate weekend crashes, Cape Coral Police say

A 53-year-old Lehigh Acres man and a 58-year-old Cape Coral man died in separate crashes over the weekend in Cape Coral.

Cape Coral Police say Dmitriy Simankin, 53, of Lehigh Acres, was driving near the 1700 block of Southwest Pine Island Road around 11:20 p.m. Friday when his car crashed with a separate car, driven by Justin Anthony Malanga, 19, of Cape Coral.

Police said both were involved in a head-on collision.

Simankin was pinned in the vehicle and, once extricated, was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. Malanga's injuries were initially labeled life-threatening, but police later downgraded them to non-life-threatening.

Then on Sunday night, Cape Coral Police responded to a crash at 326 Kismet Parkway West.

Pablo Rene Perez Viera, 58, of Cape Coral, was driving east on Kismet Parkway West at the 400 block while an unoccupied car was parked with its hazard lights on, police said.

Police said Perez Viera failed to slow down and move over for the parked vehicle. Perez Viera's front bumper rear-ended the unoccupied car.

Perez Viera suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Gulf Coast Hospital, where he died.

Police said alcohol or drugs played a role in both crashes.

Twelve people have died this year in city crashes — three of which involved alcohol or drugs.

At least 46 people have died in Lee County crashes.
