Lehigh Acres motorcyclist killed in crash with SUV on U.S. 41 in Bonita Springs

A Lehigh Acres motorcyclist died Wednesday night in a two-vehicle crash along U.S. 41 in Bonita Springs.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the 78-year-old male driver was driving a sports utility vehicle north and in the left turn lane of 41 attempted to turn onto Pelican Colony Boulevard.

A 24-year-old male on a motorcycle was southbound on 41, approaching Pelican Colony.

The SUV driver turned left in front of the motorcyclist, troopers said, and the front of the motorcycle hit the right side of the SUV.

The driver of the motorcycle, who was wearing a helmet, troopers said, died at the scene.

The driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries and a passenger in the SUV was unhurt.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Troopers do not release the names of those involved, previously citing Marsy's Law.

The fatality was at least the 104th death on Lee County roads in 2021 according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Deadly crashes this year are outpacing 2020.
