Lehigh wrestler pins the competition to win The News-Press Athlete of the Week by Babcock Ranch

Congratulations to Lehigh wrestler Blanca Cespedes, who earned 52% of the vote to win The News-Press Athlete of the Week award presented by Babcock Ranch for Jan. 17-22.

Cespedes is the first girls wrestler to win the award since the sport was sanctioned by the FHSAA.

Cespedes won by fall in each of her three bouts at the Inaugural Lady Wave Girls Wrestling Tournament, including a pin in 40 seconds in the 132-pound title match on Jan. 22.

Canterbury soccer player Jason Kitzinger placed second with 36% of the vote.

Nominees are selected based on results and information reported nightly by area coaches to sports@news-press.com and by nominations made by coaches and athletic directors. The next Athlete of the Week poll will be released at 10 a.m. Monday and voting will close at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
