DEMING – Lemonade Day in Deming and Luna County will be celebrated on Saturday, May 21. Children and their sponsors have overwhelmingly registered to participate in this one-day event hosted by the Deming-Luna Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by a host of local merchants and services.

A photo gallery chronicling the Lemonade Day preparations can be viewed on the website lemonadeday.org/deming-luna and Facebook page, lemonade day luna.

"The winners of the Best Tasting event will be out there, so be sure to check them out," said Debbie Troyer, executive director for the chamber.

Best Tasting Contest winners

• 1st Place: Main Squeeze, Emmalyn Flores, Ingrid Madrid, and Leilanny Calderon

• 2nd Place: The Zesty Lemon, Rubiel, Antonio, and Anitzia Martinez

• 3rd Place: The Sour House, Jayce Keeler

Currently, the location map shows 24 lemonade stands registered at various locations. More should register soon, and can be found on the website link https://www.lemonadeday.org/deming-luna/stands-map.

Lemmy, the mascot, and Judges Jay Yates, Barbara Reedy, Teresa Sanchez, Christie Ann Harvey, Monica Topham, Mayor Jasso, Jenifer Jones, Jill Black, and Jamie Jackson will be visiting your lemonade stands looking for the Best Lemonade Stand winners on Saturday between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

"Please support these kids Saturday. It just may be a life changing moment," Troyer said.

Lemonade Day was started in Houston, Texas in 2007 as a 501(c)3 by entrepreneur and philanthropist, Michael Holthouse. Since then, it has expanded to more than 81 programs throughout North America, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico. The average profit for participating children last year was $224, however many children in high customer traffic areas throughout their cities make much more – many even over $1,000 on that one day.

Deming and Albuquerque are the lone New Mexico Lemonade Day events.

Lemonade Day is a fun, experiential program that teaches youth how to start, own, and operate their own business – a lemonade stand. The money they make will be theirs to keep. They are encouraged to spend some, save some, and share some with a charity of their choice.

Each year, in participating cities, youth can experience entrepreneurship by setting up their business during their city's community-wide Lemonade Day, which will be held Saturday in Luna County.

Lemmy, the mascot, and a Terrazas’ limo will be loaded with partners and sponsors who will cruise around on Lemonade Day tasting, and judging young entrepreneur’s lemonade stands.
