Lemonade Day sees higher turnout, participation than last year

Jul. 25—DICKINSON — In 2019 Mayor Scott Decker

declared

the third Saturday of July would be Dickinson's annual "Lemonade Day."

"After youth have completed the

Lemonade Day

curriculum, they are prepared for the real-world experience of owning their own lemonade business," Decker said at the time.

Taylor, North Dakota, mom Melissa Gjermundson said she's happy to see the steady increase in turnout and participation year-over-year, as the number of stands have nearly doubled since 2019. Her daughter Britta, who will soon be a fifth grader at Richardton-Taylor Public School, continued what has become a family tradition in managing an annual lemonade stand aptly titled, "Waddle Waddle Lemonade." In addition to lemonade, Britta served frozen

grapes

and homemade popcorn while her older brother Sig helped.

"Lemonade Day is so amazing for these younger kids because it teaches them the entrepreneurial side of owning a small business," Gjermundson said. "We always end up having lots of friends and family that come to visit, like Sarah from the Grooming Gallery."

According to Gjermundson, the day inculcates the concepts of costs, profit and philanthropy in a tangible way for many youth in Stark County.

"So Britta paid her brother, donated 30% of her earnings to her travel basketball team and then kept the rest," she said. "So it's truly running your own small business."

Carter Fong, executive director for the Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce, said the event was another smashing success.

"Sunny skies created the perfect summertime weather for Lemonade Day 2022. We had 30 stands registered for the event and 17 volunteers who sampled the lemonade to select our finalists," Fong said.

Fong noted that the six finalists included Brightside Bakery & Beverage, LadyBug Lemonade, Lazy Daisy Lemonade, Reagan's Lemonade Stand, TR Lemonade and Wheelie Good Lemonade. Reagan's was the official 2022 taste test winner.

"Congratulations to Reagan for all of her hard work to make her lemonade stand out by having a great tasting lemonade topped with cold foam," Fong said.
