Lena Waithe and Fiancé Alana Mayo Reveal They Wed in Secret Ceremony

Lena Waithe and fiancé Alana Mayo are officially married. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the Emmy-winning actor revealed that she and her longtime love recently wed in a secret ceremony at San Francisco’s City Hall. “We snuck and did it, you know. We didn’t really make any announcements,” she said.

The location, a historical landmark known for its history of hosting LGBTQ+ weddings, was a meaningful venue to the couple. “We went to the courthouse and got married right in front of Harvey Milk’s bust,” Waithe explained. (Milk was the first openly gay elected official to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in the history of California. Sean Penn won an Oscar for his role in the 2008 film Milk, a biographical film based on his life.) “It was her idea—like all good things are—and she was just driving and she saw the courthouse and she said, ‘We should get married there,’” she added. “And I said, ‘Cool, I’m down.’“

The Master of None star added that their wedding day was a tribute to the work of activists before them. “It was a humbling day, you know, to marry someone so amazing, but also to really appreciate all the work that so many people have put in for us to be able to do that,” she said. “Everybody should be able to do that.”

The couple has been together for over three years, and Waithe proposed to Mayo, a production executive, on Thanksgiving in 2017. Waithe previously opened up to People about her vision for a low-key wedding ceremony. “It’s going to be super small, crazy small,” she said at the time. “It’s almost like an excuse to have fun with our friends. We’re anti-stress… we’re trying to make it not a stressful situation, that’s our goal.”
