Lenawee bowlers compete for state titles

CANTON — Abby Werden, Wendy Ketola and Owen Williams represented Tecumseh well on the lanes Saturday, but were unable to claim a state title.

On the girls side, the senior Werden qualified as the No. 1 seed in the girls Division 2 meet with a score of 1,299. The sophomore Ketola qualified ninth to make it into bracket play.

Ketola was eliminated in the first round by a score of 385-305 against Leah Snyder of Allegan. Werden defeated Shay-Lynne Schultz of Bay City John Glenn, 445-402, before avenging her teammates' loss and beating Snyder in the quarterfinal, 406-320.

In the semifinal, Werden was eliminated by Bella Harnish of Wayland, 403-320, before Harnish lost to Karli Vanduinen of Whitehall.

Williams, a sophomore, qualified seventh in bracket and knocked out Carson Kohler of Charlotte (379-318) and Howie Hammond of Flint Kearsley (460-407).

In the semifinal, he lost to the eventual champion, Zack Sisk of Gibraltar Carlson, by onlt two pins (463-461).

Clinton, Onsted at Division 3 State Meet: At Jackson, Clinton teammates Noelle Riley and Paige Shankland made the tournament, as did Onsted's Samantha Nichols, who made a deep run.

Nichols qualified 14th and knocked off Midland Bullock Creek senior Kristie Woollard, 387-284. The senior then beat Jonesville's Abby Gutowski, 313-303, to make the semifinal.

In the semis, Nichols fell to Flint Powers Catholic's Elizabeth Teuber, 417-254.

Riley and Shankland qualified fifth and 12th respectively with Shankland beating her teammate, 361-267. Brooke Binder of Essexville Garber then beat Shankland in the quarterfinals, 418-377.

Onsted sophomore Sydney Nichols, who won the county title for the second year in a row, missed the cut along two other bowlers by one pin with scores of 1,063.

The Wildcats' senior Allie Osgood missed the cut with a score of 893.

On the boys side, Madison junior Collin Hickman made the bracket as he qualified 12th. Hickman beat Jonathan Cook of Big Rapids, 423-366, before falling to Tyler Downs of Ogemaw Heights, 344-330.

The Trojans had junior Mykola Dowhaniuk miss qualifying by 19 pins with a total of 1,129.

Clinton sophomore Lucas Goodman rolled a total of 1,021.

Britton Deerfield at Division 4 State Meet: At Battle Creek, Britton Deerfield senior Gavin Schroen missed the cut for the bracket.

Schroen rolled a qualifying total of 1,090, missing the cut by 26 pins.

GYMNASTICS

Adrian, Tecumseh at Plymouth Regionals: At Plymouth, Jordyn Wright of Tecumseh qualified for the state meet for the third time while Tecumseh took ninth overall and Adrian was 12th.

Wright took third in the all-around to qualify for the state meet Saturday at White Lake Lakeland High School.

Tecumseh posted a team score of 129.400 and took fifth in the vault as a team with score of 35.4.

Adrian was 12th with a score of 15.975. The Maples didn't compete in the uneven bars or balance beam.
