ADRIAN — The Lenawee Christian girls soccer team used Thursday's strong winds to its advantage as the Cougars beat Manchester in a big Independent Soccer League matchup, 4-0.

The blistering wides were sweeping across the pitch from one sideline to the other, but with a slight favor toward one side of the field.

LCS (1-1, 1-0 ISL) chose to attack with the wind in the first half and scored four times.

"We felt confident that if we worked hard we'd have our chances," said head coach Nathan Sharpe. "That's what the first half was, taking our chances."

Freshman Callie Anderson scored her first goal of the season as she sent the ball toward the net and it had it deflected by a couple of Flying Dutch defenders and into the net.

Olivia Durbin then made a big impact on the game by using the wind from a pair of corner kicks.

At the 12:40 mark, she fired the ball toward the net where Mya VanEtten was waiting and deflected it into the net. Nearly five minutes later, Durbin delivered again, this time on her own as her corner kick sailed into the net.

"I knew the wind would take it and I just tried to place it where they could get on it," Durbin said. "Mya did great on that. On the second one, I saw a gap and knew I could get it in there."

With time winding down in the first half, Janae Good got behind the defense and finished to score her first goal of the season.

"She tucked it into the corner, which is something we've worked on," Sharpe said. "We responded well and in the second half we had to play against the wind. We made an adjustment in our system to play that and the girls did phenomenal job playing a system we hadn't practiced."

Avery Sluss made four saves, three in the second half, including a couple where she had adjust to make the stop due to the ball moving in the wind.

Bailey Brandly scored both goals, one off of an assist from Chloe Gerschwiler and the second on a free kick while Maddalynn Zellen made seven saves.
