Lenawee County's new COVID-19 cases fall 14%; Michigan cases up 5.6%

New coronavirus cases increased 5.6% in Michigan in the week ending Sunday as the state added 29,267 cases. The previous week had 27,705 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Lenawee County reported 271 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 315 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 25,416 cases and 324 deaths, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. The Lenawee County Health Department's online statistics continue to show two fewer deaths.

Michigan ranked 12th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, according to the Johns Hopkins data. In the latest week, coronavirus cases in the United States increased 31.8% from the week before, with 796,108 cases reported. With 3% of the country's population, Michigan had 3.68% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 42 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Within Michigan, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Washtenaw County with 501 cases per 100,000 per week; Keweenaw County with 425; and Mackinac County with 389.

Lenawee County had 275 new cases per 100,000 people as of Thursday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It remained in the CDC's "medium" level of community COVID-19, meaning people at risk of serious illness from a COVID-19 infection should consider wearing a face mask when at indoor, public places.

There were 22 Michigan counties listed in the "high" level of community COVID, meaning the CDC says people in those counties should wearing masks while at indoor, public places. Among those counties are most of those in southeastern Michigan: Monroe, Washtenaw, Wayne, Livingston, Oakland, Macomb and St. Clair.

Lucas and Fulton counties in northwestern Ohio are in the "medium" category. Williams County in Ohio and Hillsdale County in Michigan are in the "low" category.

The CDC's community COVID-19 levels are based on the number of new cases and new hospitalizations of patients with COVID.

Michigan ranked 35th among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 67% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 77.7%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.

In Lenawee County, 56% of the population has received at least one dose of COVID vaccine and 53.2% are considered fully vaccinated as of May 22, according to the CDC. Of those who are fully vaccinated, 51.3% have received a booster shot.

In the week ending Wednesday, Michigan reported administering another 89,246 vaccine doses, including 9,262 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 77,455 vaccine doses, including 6,524 first doses. In all, Michigan reported it has administered 15,906,503 total doses.

According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, 92,755 vaccine doses have been administered in Lenawee County as of May 17.

In Michigan, 78 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 76 people were reported dead.

A total of 2,501,863 people in Michigan have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 36,218 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 83,281,329 people have tested positive and 1,002,173 people have died.

Hospitals in 31 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 29 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 37 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
