Lenawee NAACP hosting candidate forum for Adrian city election Thursday

ADRIAN — General election candidates in the city of Adrian will participate in a candidate forum scheduled for today at the Weber Retreat and Conference Center on the campus of the Adrian Dominican Sisters Motherhouse, 1257 E. Siena Heights Drive.

The forum, which is sponsored by the Lenawee County branch of the NAACP, will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The candidates for Adrian’s mayor and city commission will answer prepared questions, an announcement from the Lenawee NAACP Members Facebook page said.

The forum is to be moderated by Dale Gaertner from WLEN radio.

Seven of the 10 candidates who were on the Aug. 8 primary election ballot for Adrian City Commission participated June 22 in a candidate forum conducted by the Lenawee County chapter of the NAACP at Adrian High School. Incumbent Adrian Mayor Angie Sword Heath and current city commissioner Allen Heldt have both confirmed their participation in the forum. They are both running for mayor with Heath seeking her third term in office and Heldt, who has been an Adrian city commissioner since being elected in 2015, looking to take over the mayor’s seat.

There are three open commissioner seats on the Nov. 7 election ballot that are being sought by incumbent commissioner Mary Roberts and challengers in Bob Behnke, Thomas Faulhaber, Joaquin Ramos, Matthew Schwartz and Brad Watson. All of the city commission candidates advanced to the November general election from the August primary election which narrowed the number of hopefuls from 10 down to six.

Commissioner Lad Strayer, whose term expires this year, is not seeking a third term on the commission.

The mayor serves for a term of two years, and the commissioners have four-year terms.
