Lenoir Bicycle Festival offers fun bike riding challenges

May 22—LENOIR — Bicycle enthusiasts are invited to enjoy the 2nd annual Lenoir Bicycle Festival on Saturday, June 3, starting at 10 a.m. in downtown Lenoir. Before that, on the previous evening of Friday, June 2, riders can indulge in a refreshing bike ride in the pleasant night breeze.

The Lenoir Bicycle Festival is a family-friendly event focusing on bicycling and outdoor activity. Held in downtown Lenoir, the Lenoir Bicycle Festival gives everyone a chance to ride around on downtown streets, conquer obstacle courses and bike challenges, and visit all the great downtown shops and restaurants.

Rock N Road Bicycles in Hickory has generously donated a bike to be given away during the event. Guests must be registered and present to win the bike, which is a Paramount 100 from Stone Mountain Bike Co. Visit the Rock N Road website at www.rocknroadbicycles.com to learn more.

There will also be other free prizes, including bike helmets, bicycle lights, free Summer Family Swim passes to the Lenoir Aquatic Center, and free registrations for Lenoir Parks and Recreation sports programs.

There will be a free-ride lane around a downtown block that you can ride any time during the event. There will be three obstacle courses on Main Street and West Avenue, two easy and one advanced. The obstacle courses will have rumble boards and humps, ramps, balance beams, seesaws, limbo bars and more. Riders can try out the courses all day. We may even change them up mid-event.

A time trial course will be set up on West Avenue. Riders can attempt the time trial as many times as they want to get their best time. There will be five age groups. The fastest time in each group will win a free Family Summer Swim Pass to the Lenoir Aquatic & Fitness Center. The age groups are 5-6, 7-9, 10-12,13-15, and 16 and up.

In North Carolina, children under 16 who are riding on a public roadway, public bicycle path, or other public right-of-way must wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet.

The Lenoir Police Department will host a Bicycle Safety class on North Main Street. Participants who complete the class will receive a free bicycle helmet while they last. The helmets are provided by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Local bike shops and community groups will set up tents and show their wares and services.

The Impossible Backwards Bike (IBB) will be back to challenge even the most skilled of riders. If you ride the IBB 12 feet without touching the ground, you win a prize!

The city police, fire, public works, and county EMS will have vehicles on site that visitors can touch and check out.
