Lenoir County snow forecast holding steady for 1 to 2 inches Saturday

Kinston and Lenoir County are still forecast to see more of the white stuff – up to 2 inches on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Newport.

NWS Meteorologist Mike Lee said nothing major has changed with yesterday’s report and that rain will begin Friday around lunchtime and transition to snow around 10 p.m. and into Saturday morning.

“It looks like it’s going to be 1 to 2 inches of snowfall accumulations. (The) amounts could change of course, but that’s the current forecast,” Lee said.

Lee said the heaviest snow will likely be north of Hwy 264 – around the Greenville and Washington areas. He said the snow will continue to be heavier north of those areas. Williamston’s forecast currently is for up to 4 inches. A NWS winter storm watch went into effect for Williamston and surrounding areas at 4:18 a.m. today.

Lenoir county will see 5-10 mph northerly winds Friday night, gusting to 15, with a low of 29 degrees. Saturday’s winds will be northeast at 10-15 mph with possible gusts up to 25 with a high of 37 degrees, according to Lee. He also said power outages chances are as of now on the “low end.”

Temperatures are predicted next week to be warmer with clearer weather, he said.

“With winter weather we always tell people to prepare every year. We have been in a more wintery (weather) pattern the last couple of weeks, and I would say for folks that like cold weather, you’ll like this weekend. For folks who like warm weather, all you have to do is wait until the middle of next week and we will start to warm up pretty nicely by Tuesday and Wednesday,” said Lee

According to Lee, coastal impacts will be much like last week’s storm, with mostly rain and wind with a few flakes, he said, occurring south of New Bern with an accumulation of less than an inch.
