Leon girls basketball trio ink letters of collegiate intent; all will play at Alabama junior college

On Wednesday afternoon, Leon High School girls basketball had three student-athletes sign to continue their athletic careers.

Jakyla Diawara, Daniela Pool, and Nia Similien officially joined the Lurleen B. Wallace Community College women's basketball team.

LBWCC is an institution based in Andalusia, Alabama where it competes in NJCAA Division 1 Region 22.

Diawara, a center, will join the Saints and describes herself as 'strong, aggressive, and supportive.'

The 5-foot, 11-inch Diawara led the Lady Lions in the rebounding category in the 2021-22 season with 8.4 per game.

"I really want to thank God and say that I really appreciate my mama," Diawara said. "Going with my teammates makes me more comfortable with the school."

Assisting her in the frontcourt will be fellow center 5-foot-8 inch Daniela Pool, a 2021 graduate of Leon.

Pool came from New Orleans in 2019 and took a year away from school after obtaining her diploma last spring.

"Many people don't get this opportunity so I'm blessed," Pool said. "The year off was for my mental. I wasn't ready for school and I wanted to make sure I was ready for college. Having two teammates with me is a relief since we're going to a state where we don't know anyone."

In 2020-21, she led the Lady Lions in rebounds with 8 per game.

The Lady Lions' go-to scorer, Nia Similien, will be off to LBWCC too.

The 5-foot, 3-inch guard led the team in scoring during her senior year with 13.1 points per game.

"I'm excited and ready for my future," Similien said. "It's an advantage having my teammates with me will make me feel comfortable.

"I'm excited to bring them with me."

In 2021-22, the Lady Lions finished 13-13, falling to Fort Walton Beach in the 6A Regional Quarterfinals.
