Leon's Naomi Somerset is your Big Bend Preps Athlete of the Week

This week's edition of the Athlete of the Week contest was the largest that we have ever run. With six different spring sports in session, 16 different Big Bend athletes were up for the award. In the end, it was one of the smallest sports that took home a big time win.

We're heading to the sand courts to hand out this week's award as Leon senior Naomi Somerset, who picked up over 19,000 votes out of the 26,279 submitted to soundly win the Athlete of the Week competition.

Somerset, alongside her partner Sophie Beckham, has been dominant on the sand courts this season. Leon's top pairing has been nearly unstoppable, making their case to be the first beach state champions in the history of the state. Somerset has only continued her success from indoor to beach as she was an All-Big Bend Second Team selection this past fall.

Leon is looking to translate its indoor success to the beach courts this spring, facing a competitive Big Bend slate in Sneads, Florida High, Wakulla, Chiles, and Lincoln. So far, the Lion is 8-2 on the year with its lone losses coming to Lincoln and Hagerty.

Congratulation to Somerset and finalists Zakori Ross (Godby), Colby Marini (Florida High), Traylon Ray (North Florida Christian), Skylar Young (North Florida Chrisitan), Gabrielle Hughes (Munroe), Hannah Shiver (Taylor County), Aubriana Edmondson (Wakulla Christian) Jaden Martinez (Chiles), Madison McNeill (Chiles), Isaiah Binghem, (Leon), Justin Greenwood (Rickards), Jakarma Mitchell (Rickards), Lillian Koeppel, (Maclay) and Everett Thompson (Maclay).

The Tallahassee Democrat/Big Bend Preps runs an Athlete of the Week contest every week, recognizing one standout high school athlete out of eight nominees. Voting for AotW opens on Monday and closes on Thursday.

The Athlete of the Week will be announced at noon on Friday.
