Les Dennis has opened up about why he's agreed to join the cast of Strictly Come Dancing.

The former Family Fortunes presenter has often been linked to Strictly over the years, but it wasn't until the BBC's most recent offer that he finally signed up.

The Strictly Come Dancing star told Digital Spy and other press that he felt the timing was finally right for him to make his ballroom debut.

"It was an immediate 'yes' this time," he recalled. "I was asked once before but couldn’t do it because I was still in Corrie."

Les went on: "This time I thought, I’m 70 this year, it’s probably the last time they’ll ask. So I’m so excited to go into my 71st year thinking, do something outside of your comfort zone. I didn’t hesitate."

The actor and presenter has plenty of reality TV experience, having been part of the second-ever cast of Celebrity Big Brother in addition to competing on Richard Osman's House of Games and Celebrity MasterChef.

Les recently opened up about a health scare that changed his life a few years ago, where he had to miss long stretches of his touring stage show after coming down with laryngitis and learning he was pre-diabetic.

"It has made me take responsibility for my own health," he told The Sun. "Being an older dad I want to be there for my kids. I want to be here when I am 100. They are the most important thing to me. I have to fulfill the responsibility to my kids."

Strictly Come Dancing returns for its launch special on September 16 on BBC One, while spin-off Strictly: It Takes Two airs on BBC Two. Both shows are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
