Lesco lifts Somers baseball past Canton

May 3—The Somers High baseball team was in the midst of a losing streak when it took the field against Canton Wednesday.

Tommy Lesco's play helped get the Spartans back in the win column.

The senior recorded three hits as Somers topped Canton 7-6 in a NCCC game at Somers High.

The Spartans (5-7), last year's Class S state tournament runner-up, had lost its previous three games and four out of its previous five.

Sullivan Quirk earned the win and Somers' defense played error-free. Offensively, the Spartans took advantage of six Canton errors.

Noah Asmar had three hits for the Warriors (6-6). Pitchers Sam Lincoln and Robert Dlubac pitched well.

Somers entertains Coventry on Friday.

ELLINGTON 7, SMSA 2. At Colt Park in Hartford, Evan Robbins went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored and three stolen bases to lead the Knights to the NCCC victory.

Ellington (11-2) has won four games in a row and moves to 8-0 in NCCC play. The Knights clinch a share if the league title with a win in their next game at Stafford Friday.

Robbins, a senior, got Ellington on the board first when he scored after Cam Thomas grounded into a fielder's choice in the third. Robbins then hit a two-run single in the fifth to make it 3-0.

The Knights added three more runs in the sixth. SMSA (5-8) got two back in the bottom of the inning, but it wasn't enough.

Thomas finished with two RBIs while Tristan Neville scored twice and had two steals. Starter Ryan Delaney got the win, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out three in five-plus innings.

STAFFORD 8, SUFFIELD 1. Ryan Gilluly went 4-for-4 with four RBIs as the host Bulldogs won a NCCC game at Arute Field.

The win qualifies Stafford (8-5) for the Class S state tournament. It's the second win in a row for the Bulldogs and fourth in their last five games.

Angelo Vella added two hits and two RBIs for the hosts. Cole Hasel contributed three hits while Josh Tuller had two.

Pitcher Collin Gudeman went the distance in the win. He allowed five hits, struck out eight and walked two.

Tristan Dusto drove in the lone run for Suffield (4-9).

The Wildcats return home today when they host Windsor Locks. Stafford is back in action when it entertains Ellington.

NEWINGTON 11, EAST CATHOLIC 1. At Penders Field, Nick Kelly had three hits and scored three runs for No. 3 Newington in its CCC interdivisional win.

Sam Dzord was the winning pitcher for the Nor'Easters (9-2). Ethan Rainha doubled for East Catholic (3-10) while TJ Winn singled and scored the lone run.

The Eagles are at Berlin Monday.

SOUTHINGTON 5, MANCHESTER 0. In Southington, C.J. Pierce pitched a four-hit shutout as the seventh-ranked Blue Knights won a CCC interdivisional game.

PJ Ortiz, Anthony Osella, Angel Rodriguez and Dennis Flores had the hits for Manchester (9-5). Jaden Maia led the way with two hits for Southington (9-3).

Manchester hosts Wilcox Tech Friday.

MALONEY 5, TOLLAND 3. In Tolland, Rafael Rodriguez's RBI double in the seventh lifted the Spartans to the CCC interdivisional win.

Rodrgiuez's hit put the Spartans (8-3) up one and teammate Kyle Valentine added an RBI single in the inning to make it 5-3. Junior Josh Blanchard had two hits and scored twice for Tolland (4-7).

The Eagles host Rockville today.

ABBOTT TECH 4, CHENEY TECH 0. In Danbury, Tyler Waterbury's two-hitter paced Abbott Tech to the CTC win. He struck out eight.

Tyler Meeks doubled and tripled for Abbott Tech (11-3). Cheney Tech is 6-8 and hosts Prince Tech Monday.
