LESLIE MANN: Hi. I'm Leslie Mann. JUDD APATOW: And I'm Judd Apatow. And welcome to the "WIRED" Autocomplete Interview. [MUSIC PLAYING] JUDD APATOW: Are we supposed to be bantery all the time? Because we don't really banter like this. LESLIE MANN: No. You ignore me and I ignore you. What does Judd Apatow do? JUDD APATOW: That's an existential question right there. That's like a Buddhist saying. That's like what is a hand-- LESLIE MANN: What does Judd Apatow do? JUDD APATOW: What is the sound of one hand clapping? What does Judd Apatow do? You know what this should say? What should Judd Apatow do. LESLIE MANN: What did Judd Apatow write? JUDD APATOW: You don't know by now? I'm supposed to-- LESLIE MANN: They want to know. JUDD APATOW: They want to know? LESLIE MANN: Yeah. JUDD APATOW: What did I write? Your favorite films of all time. The ones that you like best. The ones that you think are better than all the others. LESLIE MANN: Mm-hmm. OK, what movies has Judd Apatow acted in? JUDD APATOW: I was in the movie about the room where I played asshole producer. Although in the credits it said, Judd Apatow as himself. LESLIE MANN: Didn't you play the elephant in that one-- JUDD APATOW: In "The Zookeeper." I was the elephant in "The Zookeeper." LESLIE MANN: You were very proud of that. JUDD APATOW: That was a voice-over performance, really. LESLIE MANN: Were you in "Anchorman"? JUDD APATOW: I smelled something that stunk in "Anchorman." LESLIE MANN: Didn't you do Jay Leno or something? JUDD APATOW: I did an impression of Jay Leno on an episode of "The Critic" and on "The Ben Stiller Show." You just named all five of my acting credits. I wasn't good in any of them. LESLIE MANN: What movies has Judd Apatow directed? JUDD APATOW: OK. I can't. I can't. Just put a graphic up right here in front of me. It's weird to make people like lists their credits. LESLIE MANN: I get that all the time. People come up to me and say, oh my gosh. Hey, I love you. What were you in? And then I say, well, and I list what I've been in. And they're like, no, no. And then I just stand there like an idiot trying to remind them what they know me from. OK, what does Judd Apatow think of "Euphoria"? JUDD APATOW: I love "Euphoria." It left me in a puddle. I cried so hard. It was so good. So amazing this season. I enjoy Maude Apatow's work. I feel like when I watched the show, I think, am I supposed to direct like that? Like, it looks good. LESLIE MANN: Really good. JUDD APATOW: And there's like angles and the camera moves. I don't know how to do any of that. So I'm both-- I love it and then I'm like quietly jealous and ashamed of myself. LESLIE MANN: OK. What does Judd Apatow look like? JUDD APATOW: Not like this all the time. LESLIE MANN: No. JUDD APATOW: And just imagine not showering. Add that to this, and not dressing up, and not taking care of myself in a way that-- LESLIE MANN: That's the version I get. JUDD APATOW: Yeah. You're the lucky one. What does Leslie Mann play in? LESLIE MANN: Play in? JUDD APATOW: Does that mean like what movies you're in? LESLIE MANN: I think that's what that means. JUDD APATOW: Who calls it play in? LESLIE MANN: Some people say that. Some people say, what do you play in. JUDD APATOW: No one's ever said that. LESLIE MANN: People say that. JUDD APATOW: What do you play in? This is-- LESLIE MANN: I think it's like a-- JUDD APATOW: America's grammar is crazy. What was Leslie Mann's first movie? LESLIE MANN: Well, I think my first movie was the one where I had the really short haircut. OK, I can't remember. But the one I do remember, I played a prostitute with Bruce Willis and Walter Hill. JUDD APATOW: And you double crossed him. LESLIE MANN: And I double crossed him and he murdered me. JUDD APATOW: "Last Man Standing." Bruce Willis like beat you up because you like ratted him out. LESLIE MANN: Yeah. It's actually really good. JUDD APATOW: Walter Hill. LESLIE MANN: Yeah. JUDD APATOW: Warriors, come out to play. LESLIE MANN: I don't know what my natural hair color is anymore. JUDD APATOW: What is Leslie Mann's natural hair color? LESLIE MANN: It could be anything at this point. JUDD APATOW: We don't know what's underneath here. We haven't looked in decades. And you always want me to dye my hair. LESLIE MANN: Remember when you dyed my hair? So during lockdown, Judd dyed my hair. I said, I need my roots done and she sent me stuff stupidly thinking that I would be able to figure out how to use it. I didn't-- I asked you to like put it on the back part that I couldn't see and he like put way too much. And so this whole area from here back was like bright orange. JUDD APATOW: Not an ugly orange. LESLIE MANN: It was terrible. It was like a big chunk of orange. JUDD APATOW: I'm sorry. LESLIE MANN: And I had to keep that for a long time until it grew out. JUDD APATOW: What does Leslie Mann's daughter's name? LESLIE MANN: I have two daughters. Maude Apatow is 24. And Iris Apatow is 19. We kind of started talking about baby names and my favorite movie is "Harold and Maude." JUDD APATOW: My favorite TV show is "Maude." LESLIE MANN: And I said, what if her name is Maude? And we kind of laughed about it. And then it just stuck and we just called her Maude for my whole pregnancy. And then she couldn't be anyone else. She was just Maude. And then Iris, we didn't have a name up until the very end. And I was taking a nap one day because I was huge and it was hot and I was miserable. And I fell asleep. And in my dream, somebody whispered, or somebody whispered in my ear, Iris. JUDD APATOW: Yep. LESLIE MANN: And it woke me up. And I ran downstairs and I said, Judd! Her name's Iris. And that was it. JUDD APATOW: That was me whispering. I'd been in the baby book all day, just going through the baby book. I was like, Iris. What is Leslie Mann like in real life? LESLIE MANN: Delightful. JUDD APATOW: She's just like this all day. Right? LESLIE MANN: Pretty much. JUDD APATOW: This isn't like a character she's doing right now. LESLIE MANN: I'm in a better mood right now than I normally am. JUDD APATOW: But this is real life, isn't it? LESLIE MANN: I think it is. JUDD APATOW: Are we in real life? LESLIE MANN: Is Judd Apatow from Michigan? No. Long Island. Are Judd Apatow and Adam Sandler friends? They are very good friends. JUDD APATOW: Is Judd Apatow in "Anchorman"? LESLIE MANN: Yes. JUDD APATOW: I am an "Anchorman." I think I say that something smells like a diaper filled with hot dog farts. Are Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann still married? LESLIE MANN: Nope. JUDD APATOW: No. We're holding that back. We're just promoting the movie. LESLIE MANN: Almost 25 years. 25 years in June. JUDD APATOW: That's right. LESLIE MANN: Isn't that crazy? JUDD APATOW: Can you believe that everyone got divorced in all of Hollywood except us? We're the last survivors. Are Judd Apatow and Paul Rudd friends? We are friends, and I'm aging better than him. You know it's true. His deal with the devil is working out so well. LESLIE MANN: Is Paul Rudd married to Leslie Mann? JUDD APATOW: In another reality. In another reality. Are Leslie Mann and Cameron Diaz friends? LESLIE MANN: Yes. I love, love, love her. JUDD APATOW: Are Leslie Mann's daughters in "This Is 40"? LESLIE MANN: Yes, those are my daughters Maude and Iris. JUDD APATOW: And we hired them because we don't like other people's children. LESLIE MANN: And Judd tricked them into-- or figured out a way to pay them very little. JUDD APATOW: And then keep it for myself. LESLIE MANN: Yeah. JUDD APATOW: I both screwed them and stole from them at the same time. Are Leslie Mann and Katherine Heigl friends? LESLIE MANN: Yes. JUDD APATOW: How come no one wants to know who I'm friends with? LESLIE MANN: Is Leslie Mann in "Big Daddy"? I am in "Big Daddy." I played the Hooters Girl. As the Hooters Girl, I had these breast pads. Something. JUDD APATOW: Those were fake? LESLIE MANN: I still have them. I asked to keep them after the movie. And every year I have to like care for them by taking them out of these little plastic bags and putting baby powder on them to keep them from disintegrating or something. So over the years, like every year I do that. JUDD APATOW: Why are you like maintaining them? LESLIE MANN: I keep them in a bag. I don't know. JUDD APATOW: When are we going to use them? [INTERPOSING VOICES] JUDD APATOW: Halloween? Halloween? LESLIE MANN: Yeah, maybe Halloween. But anyway, I still have them. JUDD APATOW: /it's so weird you asked. It's disgusting that you asked. LESLIE MANN: Judd Apatow Kanye West Super Bowl. JUDD APATOW: Yeah. Judd Apatow King of Staten-- These aren't really questions. You want to know something about it? "King of Staten Island." LESLIE MANN: They're just being lazy. JUDD APATOW: Yeah, they're not-- LESLIE MANN: I do that. And Google guesses right. JUDD APATOW: But when we Google things, it's different. We'll Google like, cats, if they could, would they murder you? That's what our Google's are. LESLIE MANN: Yeah. JUDD APATOW: Cats, do they really like you? Cats, are they only your friends to get food? LESLIE MANN: What does it mean when they butt heads with you. Ours are mainly cat searches. JUDD APATOW: Cats, if they sleep on the pillow next to you, will you get pink eye? LESLIE MANN: Will they-- yeah. JUDD APATOW: This is what we search. Everything we search is related to cats. LESLIE MANN: Yeah. They don't give you pink eye, by the way. JUDD APATOW: Judd Apatow Mets pitch. That means people are looking at my bad first pitch. And I don't think that's cool, OK? I did the best I could. I hadn't thrown a ball in about 15 years. And no, I didn't meet-- it didn't make it to the plate. But it went straight towards the plate. And so that's not that bad. LESLIE MANN: That look on your face, the look that you have when you're doing the pitch, which is like, like-- do that look. No, but it's more like, scared. Well, JUDD APATOW: There's 50,000 people there. LESLIE MANN: That's the look on his face every time he takes a bite of soup. JUDD APATOW: Because it's hot! It might be hot. I'm scared. LESLIE MANN: He'll fill his spoon. He gets the biggest spoon. And then he goes, and he can't not do it. He can't not make that face. And it's so-- I can't watch him eat. [INTERPOSING VOICES] JUDD APATOW: I'm going to pretend I'm eating soup. LESLIE MANN: He's going to-- Does Leslie Mann have a middle name? Yes, it's Jean, and it's a family name for like-- yeah. JUDD APATOW: For someone named Jean. LESLIE MANN: Janet and Jean. Janet and Jean. JUDD APATOW: Leslie Mann "Beverly Hills Chihuahua." LESLIE MANN: I was in that movie, but I don't think that I had credit in it or something. JUDD APATOW: Well, though, the secret's out. You are a dog in that movie. LESLIE MANN: I was. I was in that movie. JUDD APATOW: What dog were you? LESLIE MANN: Some kind of like shopping dog. JUDD APATOW: Like a little tiny dog. LESLIE MANN: I think all shopping dogs. I can't remember. JUDD APATOW: Leslie Mann yelling at kid. LESLIE MANN: That-- JUDD APATOW: That's "This Is 40." LESLIE MANN: Yeah. JUDD APATOW: Ryan Lee. LESLIE MANN: Ryan Lee. He's so funny. I did yell at him. It was satisfying. JUDD APATOW: Because we've always wanted to do that to children. We've always wanted to tell off a child. LESLIE MANN: As a parent, every parent knows what we're talking about. JUDD APATOW: Yeah. LESLIE MANN: When some kid's mean to your kid. JUDD APATOW: You want to curse them out. LESLIE MANN: You want to curse them out. JUDD APATOW: And you did that for America and the world. Leslie Mann Australian accent. LESLIE MANN: I'm terrible with accents. Terrible. I worked really hard at trying to learn this Australian accent, and-- JUDD APATOW: "This Is 40"? LESLIE MANN: No, "Funny People." JUDD APATOW: Oh jeez. LESLIE MANN: And with Eric Bana. And he sat with me for hours trying to teach me, and I just couldn't get it. JUDD APATOW: Can you still do an Australian accent? Bring me my didgeridoo. I want to play it while I eat this Vegemite sandwich. LESLIE MANN: Bring me my didgeridoo. JUDD APATOW: This limits the career in such a big way, because you could have played all of the Australian people in Australian history. LESLIE MANN: Wait, there's like a thing that I could say all the time with an Australian accent. JUDD APATOW: Oi! LESLIE MANN: Oi! JUDD APATOW: "How to Be Single" Leslie Mann. LESLIE MANN: I was in a movie "How to Be Single." I watched part of it the other day, and it's very good. JUDD APATOW: And it was Jake Lacy, was your love interest. LESLIE MANN: Oh yeah, Jake Lacy. JUDD APATOW: And you guys were adorable together. But then we watch "White Lotus," and he's like a dick. LESLIE MANN: He was so mean! JUDD APATOW: He's an asshole. LESLIE MANN: Yeah. JUDD APATOW: What a great actor, because he was so charming with you and then so terrible to the other people. I guess that's good acting. [INTERPOSING VOICES] LESLIE MANN: What is he like in real life? JUDD APATOW: Adorable. LESLIE MANN: Yeah, we don't know. JUDD APATOW: I know. I worked with him on "Girls." This has been Autocomplete with Leslie Mann and Judd Apatow. I learned that, like, when people Google my name, they're not looking for sexy pics of me. Where on the internet are sexy pics of Judd? Ever do a porno? What website is it on? Their interest in me is limited, which is good. You don't really want people Googling you that much. You want people not Googling you. LESLIE MANN: Yeah.
