Let’s dump the current Supreme Court, Turlock resident advises | Letters to the Editor

Men need their fathers

In regards to “Fox News alert: Andrew Lester didn’t act alone” which appeared in print on 23, the writer opined that fear and paranoia brought on by watching Fox News contributed to an 84-year-old shooting a 16-year-old who mistakenly rang his doorbell. She wrote “a 24-7 diet of spicy race-baiting and white nationalist talking points is corrosive to your brain and democracy.” She continued to twice state that Fox News hosts point to fatherless Black families being a reason for crime in our country. She states that “pumping that pollution day after day and year after year is not harmless.”

I have the honor of serving on an advisory council of an organization that ministers to men in drug and alcohol recovery. At any point in time, there are between 80-110 men in the program. We have asked the men how many had absentee fathers, and the vast majority had little to no contact or were abused by their fathers while growing up. Most of these men have served prison time. It doesn’t matter if you are white, Black, Asian or Latino. Race has nothing to do with it. Men need their dads in their lives. And just because that information comes from a source you’re politically opposed to, it doesn’t mean it’s wrong.

Courting the court

Those generous folks who host the Supreme Court Justices may not have had cases before the court, but they sure have agendas they want them to consider.

Constitution confusion

Here we go again! The public and government’s inability to read the Second Amendment to the U.S. constitution is replete. So let’s instead consider the First Amendment which seems to allow churches to run the U.S. government. Churches are allowed to apply their own personal rules upon their parishioners, not the entire nation.

The First Amendment states that any two-bit church can make its own rules and laws for their members. How these churches enforce their “rules” is their own business, so long as they do not violate U.S. law. Also, let’s dump the current “Supreme” Court and allow the two parties, Democrats and Republicans, to select four members each, an even number.

California crisis

Welcome to Hotel California where the driveway is full of potholes and potheads; where the servants of the people live in the lap of extraordinary wealth and the children of Cesar Chavez can’t qualify for low-income housing. It’s where the service society of Ross Perot are expected to support the masses and the middle class has been allocated the curb so the homeless can have the sidewalks.

Here is where solutions are never found, but the promise of a brighter tomorrow is just around the corner; where a $19 billion surplus stimulates next year’s tax increase; where education, infrastructure and affordable housing are on par with that of Ethiopia; where the war on poverty, drugs and racial inequality have ended in disaster and embarrassment. And here is where the war on our Constitution and civil rights goes unnoticed by those making the laws.
