Let your Pa. pride show on #NationalPennsylvaniaDay

Jul. 20—Today, July 20, is National Pennsylvania Day.

Starting back in 2017, a North Dakota-based organization called National Day Calendar (NDC), began a campaign to recognize each state in the order they joined the Union, beginning on Independence Day.

As the second state to join the Union, and home of the once temporary capitol of the nation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Day was designated as July 20.

So while it may not be an officially recognized national holiday, there's no reason to not celebrate the Keystone State. The nickname itself is indicative of Pennsylvania's importance in establishing America as we know it. Every experienced mason, bridge builder, and the like knows that without a keystone, a structure will surely lose integrity. There's plenty of historic landmarks, a certain cheese whiz-laden steak sandwich synonymous with the City of Brotherly Love, and almost immeasurable outdoor activities to enjoy all year long.

A few locals were more than happy to offer their thoughts on what they love about PA.

Jesse Brandt, 19, of Kingston, took a break from his stroll at Kirby Park to share. "Pennsylvania has some of the nicest views I've ever seen," he said, noting that he's spent time in several different states and that ours certainly offers much to please the eye and many social media worthy views sure to garner the 'likes'.

Edwardsville resident and Plains Township native, Shane Smith, 29, said, 'The might Susquehanna,' is one of the things he loves most about the state. An avid angler and fishermen, Smith said he spends a lot of his free time on the banks of the river, casting out in hopes of the catch of the day. "Nothing beats a beautiful day on the Susquehanna," Smith shared.

And Duryea resident, Erica Murdock noted that the climate of the area is something worth celebrating. "I always fight for the warm weather and the sunny, beautiful days," she said, "But having all four seasons is pretty spectacular."

Regardless of what one's personal reasons may be, there's certainly a lot to celebrate as a Pennsylvanian.
