Hey, everyone, it’s paczki time!

The traditional Polish doughnuts, pronounced “poonch-key” or “punch-key,” are a sweet treat before Lent. Polish Catholics feast on them as they prepare for six lean weeks of penance and fasting.

The sweet, egg-rich dough is filled with jam, cream or custard and dusted in powdered sugar or topped with icing. Usually deep-fried but sometimes baked, the pastries contain more filling than a typical jelly doughnut and can pack 300 to 600 calories with 25 grams of fat. But who’s counting?

This year, Fat Tuesday is Feb. 13. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on Feb. 14, while Easter Sunday falls on March 31. Orthodox Lent begins March 18 with Easter falling on May 5.

Many local bakeries already are selling paczki or plan to serve them on Fat Tuesday. Several grocery chains (including Acme, Buehler, Fishers, Giant Eagle, Marc’s and Meijer) also offer paczki, as do some U.S. doughnut chains.

You might want to order ahead. The specialty doughnuts often sell out.
