Fox's boss has opened up about cancelling Lethal Weapon after three seasons, admitting it was a "tough" call.

The show was axed last week, a decision that came after years of controversy surrounding its cast members.

However, Fox CEO Charlie Collier spoke (via Deadline) of a "series of tough choices we have to make this time a year".

"In the quest to be number one, you have to make tough choices, and Lethal Weapon was unfortunately on the other side (of the bubble)," he added.

Collier was also asked if behind-the-scenes drama was the reason for the cancellation, though only said it was driven by "the commitment to try to keep growing and invest in the future".

Original star Clayne Crawford was famously fired from the show last year following allegedly intimidating on-set behaviour, and was later replaced by Seann William Scott for season three.

Leaked audio also revealed a tense confrontation between Crawford and his co-star Damon Wayans.

More drama hit the series last October when Wayans revealed he was quitting, though creator Matt Miller said he was "very hopeful" that the star would return.

The series also starred Kevin Rahm, Jordana Brewster, Johnathan Fernandez, Dante Brown, Chandler Kinney and Michelle Mitchenor.

Lethal Weapon aired on FOX in the US and on ITV in the UK.
