Let's talk business: Registration opens for 'Spice up Spring' chile competition

The Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce and Visit Pueblo are hosting a Spice Up Spring Pueblo Chile Recipe Competition.

Registration will open March 20 and run through April 3. All registrants must be a licensed Pueblo County restaurant or food truck.

Each registrant is required to submit their original Pueblo Chile recipe(s) in writing and must agree to the public release of their recipe(s). Judging will be performed the week of April 17 at each entrant's individual location.

Registration is a $50 entry fee plus $10 for each additional category. Categories include appetizer, entrée, dessert and cocktail.

First-place winners in each category will receive a coveted Pueblo Chile Proud trophy, a certified Pueblo Chile T-Shirt, two bushels of fresh-roasted Pueblo Chile, a $250 cash prize and master chile chef bragging rights with free publicity. Recipes will also be considered for the Official Pueblo Chile Recipe Book.

CBI's Pueblo West lab wins national recognition

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation's four forensic labs, including one in Pueblo West, have been nationally recognized for their application of high-quality standards and practices in forensic science by the National Institutes of Science and Technology.

"The CBI Forensic Services is committed to following national standards and best practices," said Lance Allen, deputy director overseeing forensic services. "I’m proud of the work by the CBI scientists and all of forensic services to implement these standards in our analysis."

The standards address forensic disciplines including DNA, toxicology and digital evidence and can improve consistency, ensure confidence in the accuracy and positively increase the impact of admissibility and expert testimony in courts of law.

Pueblo City-County Library District to honor 40 outstanding women

The Outstanding Women Awards, hosted by Pueblo City-County Library District, is set to honor 40 local women during a March 31 luncheon at Robert Hoag Rawlings Public Library, 100 E. Abriendo Ave.

The luncheon is set to run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the newly renovated Ryals Grand Event Space on the fourth floor of the Rawlings Library. The event celebrates Women's History Month and is the first to be held in-person since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Honerees include Brandi Adakai, Remy Andrada, Janis Arlow, Mary Bailey, Terry Baughman, Kryste Brown, Velma Campbell, Joan Chun, Barb Clementi, Roe Ann Collette, Maria de la Cruz, Sara Funk Martinez, Elizabeth Gallegos, Jackie Galli, Megan Gordon, Renee Graham, Jeanne Graves, Stacey Harner, Katie Harshman, Abbey Hartless, Aubrey Holland, Kimberly Kane, Cindy Lau, Katie Ledbetter, Carma Loontjer, Sandy Lundahl, Destin Mehess, Robin Moritz, Michelle Musso, Amy Nelson, Ray Packard, Torri Shafer, Nancy Smith, Laura Solano, Michelle Swerdfeger, Teresa Therriault, Aubrey Michelle Vialpando, Jenn White, Kristyn White Davis and Peggy Wolf.

Reservations are required and can be made online at pueblolibrary.org/outstandingwomen on or before March 24. Cost for the lunch is $30 per person.

Credit Union of Colorado opens college scholarship applications

Credit Union of Colorado's Foundation is offering college scholarships.

The foundation will provide a $5,000 scholarship to 10 students, for a total of $50,000 in tuition assistance for the 2023-24 school year. Deadline to apply is April 15. Scholarship eligibility is extended to students who are Colorado residents enrolled in, or scheduled to enter, an accredited college or university as an undergraduate taking at least 12 credit hours per semester.

Applicants must maintain a minimum 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale in high school or during the previous 12 months in college. Students should also demonstrate an active commitment to volunteer activities and community service at their school or in their local community.

Ent Credit Union collecting books for children

Ent Credit Union is hosting a book collection drive in honor of reaching 500,000 customers.

The credit union hopes to collect 500 books per center, all of which will be distributed to area nonprofit organizations including Court Appointed Special Advocates. Books are being accepted at the Pueblo Main service center, 300 W. Fifth St.; the branch at 2975 W. Northern Ave.; and the Pueblo West branch at 3583 E. Spaulding Ave.
