Letter: Cell phones and safety

The first cell phones were a great tool. The let us be away from home and the office and still maintain contact with people. It was a phone that we could take with us and make and receive calls. An excellent tool and convenience.

Then things changed. The internet came to these phones, and with it - social media, movies, music, and games. And we gave these phones to our children.

Through this device, we gave every evil in the world access to our lives and the lives of our children.

While some adults could handle this new access, many could not. Most certainly our children have no hope of defending themselves against it. They do not have the maturity or wisdom or strength, and we bought them phones anyway, and paid for this access each month.

We would never allow bullies and mean hateful kids to come into our homes and beat up our kids; but we give them cell phones with access to the internet.

We would never allow pornography into our kid’s bedrooms; but we give them cell phones with access to the internet.

We would never allow them to watch movies, listen to music, or play games filled with horror, violence, sex, and drugs; but we give them cell phones with access to the internet.

Let’s do some research before handing phones to our kids. I came across “GABB WIRELESS.” A cell phone free from internet, games, and social media. I bet there are others. Let’s swap out current phones for safer options. Let’s protect their mental and emotional health as well as their physical health.
