Letter: Concerning Roe v. Wade, women 'deserve better'

On Friday, a police officer leads a K9 around steel fencing and barricades surrounding the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has ended constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place nearly 50 years in a decision by its conservative majority to overturn Roe v. Wade.

As a youngster raised in a conservative environment in Kentucky, I am a bit embarrassed by some of the major national decisions being made today that carry a conservative banner. Of course, back then conservatives and liberals worked together in balanced discussions, cooperating for the best interest of America and all its people.

Today, the USA has an environment of relentless obstruction and failure of one group to even acknowledge another. This atmosphere appears now to involve the Supreme Court.

With six Republican appointees and the recent addition of justices Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, conservative judgments are prominent. SCOTUS has recently overturned New York’s restrictions on gun-carrying rights and upheld Mississippi’s  abortion limits.

And this week’s action to overturn Roe v. Wade will incite demonstrations across the nation.

This will have an enormous impact on women’s choice. One in four women have an abortion by age 45, according to a 2017 study by researchers at the Guttmacher Institute. Of them, 75% have very low incomes and 59% already have at least one child. Imagine a victim of rape or incest with no options available. The procedure can be performed before one is taking a life.

America’s ladies deserve better care and attention.
