Letter: Democrats deserve more than apology from McMaster for 'hunting with dogs' comment

In May, during the South Carolina GOP convention, Gov. Henry McMaster made a reprehensible statement alluding to his desire to "hunt Democrats with dogs."
This statement is not only derogatory, but also insensitive to the significant historical struggles faced by the Black people of South Carolina. Many are direct descendants of people who were oppressed, hunted with dogs, and even lynched during South Carolina’s long history as a colony and state.
McMaster's comments reveal an alarming lack of respect, sensitivity and empathy toward this community and demonstrate blatant disregard for the principles of equality, fairness, and respect that should be affirmed by all.The South Carolina Democratic Party has demanded an apology in the wake of McMaster's offensive and destructive rhetoric, but it must demand more. Any apology that does not ultimately change behavior is an empty gesture. The Democratic Party must demand that the governor not only apologize, but that he also promises to never repeat the statement; that he publicly states that he will not tolerate the use of such statements and references, even in jest, from any Republican Party leader, member of his administration, Republican Party donor, or elected official; and that he promises to publicly repudiate anyone who does.As a party that has championed civil rights for generations, we have a responsibility to take bold action and reaffirm our commitment to building a better future for all Americans. By standing together and taking a firm stance against those who seek to divide us, we can build a more robust and equitable society.Let us not forget that, to paraphrase President John F. Kennedy, “Sincerity is always subject to proof.”
We applaud the Democratic Party for demanding accountability and urge the party to continue to demand actions that prove a sincere commitment to change.Derrick PhillipsPaul Merlo
